Description
Yo-Ling-Ho (The Flying Lighthouse Dragon) is a character from a Dutch children's book from the mid '80s by Marianne Colijn and illustrated by Petra Talsma. This little dragon gets abandoned by his mother on the day he hatches because he has a red face that flashes like a lighthouse which is something that has never happened in the 100 years she's laid an egg. Kinda sad yes, but soon Yo-Ling-Ho meets a large seabird who befriends him and they have adventures together and it all ends happyAs a kid I always rather liked the book and its illustrations and a few years ago I was able to obtain it as a written-off library book (presumably because it was rarely read, it's still in nick condition). Using the front cover for inspiration I created my own version of this little dragon and I'm pretty pleased with it
Size aprox. 2½ x 3½ inch, media black fineliner and markers.

I love it when I find childhood memories in the library; my great treasure is a tiny book that I still consider the best I ever found of how to draw animals. It's from 1979 apparently. I first found it when I was 12, and the written off version a few years ago.
Library books usually get written off because they're old (it's not about when they're written, but when they're published). In ours there are none even left of the '90s (except big letter books). If you've seen them you know why, they just look and feel dirty. If I see a book from 2004 I already think ugh.
I can't say I know this story! But the dragon sure looks cute.

There are still some books from way back when that I hope to find someday
I have more written off books and they do look the part. That's why it's so unusual that this particular book looks so good. The pages are slightly yellow and the hard cover has a few small indentations and that's it. It looks like it has just been owned and read by one person.
