Never thought about doing clever mark-making like you've done on the beard, it looks great there duuude. What brush did you use to work on this? (and I can see your style so much better here heh! ♥)
Well to me it seems like the value on the colored version was really dark around the eyes/cheeks. (Unless you wanted to do a lighter version or whatever). I've never really played around with this method, but you could try out dropping grayscale values and shade before coloring. All I can say for now, is borrow coloring techniques from artists you like online.
There's this great tutorial by I've got on Vol. 3 of a Style School book. (But I don't want to upload it online, I can send them via messenger for ya though D

I don't know how clever it is, but it's just a flat opac brush (in SAI, ofc). Yes I agree! I've been trialling this kind of style for a little while and I think I'm sort of heading in the right direction to where I want to go with it! :>
And I know, the other colour wip was horrendous. I scrapped that, and erased a lot of the shading under the eyes from before as well as redrawing them because it was totally putting the whole thing off. My fav artist at the mo is *offrecord and I guess I'm trying to emulate some of her colouring and line technique, although I am familiar with *cellar-fcp and if you wanted to send it to me I would be more than happy!

I wonder if she colours at full strength and then applies filters/desaturation etc. after or has some amazing ability to paint like that, straight up??
