This is something I've always been curious about. it seems to happen with everyone, and I'm wondering if there is some sort of scientific explanation (The nerd in me requires a scientific explanation for everything, and if there isn't one, it drives me crazy) I mean, even people who don't draw or write or do any form of art seem to feel more creative at night. (e.g. all the weird facebook pictures people take with their friends)
I think it's because the daytime clutters your mind with other things, so it restricts you imagination, but during the night, you're relaxing and your brain is just kind of free to do whatever it wants. (It's sort of the same to the person who said it also happens when they should be studying, when you're doing something boring you usually start daydreaming, and you get more creative)

or you can compare it to taking drugs you know like Pink Floyd and they are really uncommon with their music
You see at 1 am you are sleepy so what you think of doesn't pass through the "logic" of the brain and it comes out as creative

This has been a constant enough condition in my life that I've come to the conclusion that by that hour I'm tired enough to lose my inhibitions enough to just go for whatever my art muse wants. Screw perfectionism/reservations, hurray!
