Warning: This picture is a bit big, but full veiw is recommended.*Edited and reuploaded for 9/11 remembrance/anniversary thing...*
Just don't ask. Ever since 9/11/01, I've been dying to do an "American" themed picture and my Godzilla obsession didn't help out.
So here is the American style Godzilla, holding a huge American flag. Yay!
This picture nearly made me die from my own insanity.
Scratchboard is a pain, but it turned out good in the end I guess.

Although Godzilla had more of a tendency to y'know, tear things up as desired ><

The Japanese Godzilla is more of a giant, evil, angry, movie monster destroying cities, while the American Godzilla is more of a friendly, giant hero movie monster. Sort of.

Switch evil out with, say, elemental. He started out as a kind of vengeful force of nature, angry with man for using atomic weapons as an alegory for nuclear proliferation several years after WWII.

Him holding the flag just seemed a little more warm and made him more connected to it since this was influenced by the tragic 9/11 event

Well great picture, even though I disliked the American Godzilla! The cartoon was better but you may not like it, since it's not overly patriotic.

OOoh, very well done. I know how hard scratchboard can be.
XD Plus, I always liked the American Godzilla. Just seemed more.. Biologically possible to me, I guess. But, people love the classics and cant stand change, so I guess its just me and a few others.

I agree on your points, I'm also a big fan of the American Godzilla. To me, that was the creature I grew up with the most (as Godzilla) and that creature is also how I would define "Godzilla".

*nod* While I have no issues with the original godzilla stories, I just never could get over how... Artificial and plasticy the original looked growing up, and how harmless it sort of looked -- there were times where I was sure all you'd need is a stiff breeze to blow it over with how unstable it looked. Meanwhile, while there were some serious flaws with the American movie (though I've yet to encounter a movie without any flaws), their godzilla looked a lot more dangerous. It wasn't a slow, lumbering rubber suit man flailing its arms, it was a swift hunter, sturdy and powerful looking.
And in the cartoon version they added the atomic breath so it might have had that too. It just didn't use it often, which makes since since such an ability would drain its reserves and likely be a last resort sort of defense/attack ability and realistically would require a lot of food to recharge with, and the american movie version was looking for a place to lay its eggs and gathering food for them to eat rather than eating for itself so wouldn't have been able or willing to just.. Lay waste like that

Totally agree, I really like the Japanese Godzilla (mostly the more serious Heisei series) but the American Godzilla is in my opinion so much better in so many ways. I mean, first, the Godzilla '98 is much more realistic and believable (it really looks and feels like something that is real or could be real), and how it's appearances in the film are performed makes the creature really seem like a truly large creature, when I look at the Japanese Godzilla I don't really get the feeling that it is a large creature. Most of the time it feels like a toy that a kid plays with and pretends that its gigantic, while it's evidently not. Even though the Japanese creature might be supposed to be larger, the American creature actually feels gigantic and real.
It's true that there are no flawless films, and to point out the flaws of the American film doesn't make the Japanese films better, as they too have flaws. I agree, Godzilla '98 did look more dangerous, powerful and agile, and it certainly looked more like a dinosaur, the 1954 creature was also supposed to have looked like a dinosaur but they didn't know what Godzilla should look like. It would have been revealed in the now cancelled "GODZILLA 2" that Godzilla actually could breath fire. Also, the flammable gas that Godzilla '98 blew out of its mouth is also a breath and since it was radioactive it could be called atomic breath.
