Description

Harper was a perennial bad influence on Evelyn, her best friend since childhood; encouraging the less popular brunette to smoke her first cigarette at the age of nine, drink her first beer at the age of twelve, and kiss her first boyfriend at the age of thirteen. Evelyn always admired her friend’s confidence, bubbly personality, and general mischievousness; attributes which were starkly lacking in her own introverted personality. Despite this, it was Evelyn who first settled down and got married. Harper never did. She was too busy partying throughout her youth.

Now in their late twenties, Harper began to coax Evelyn into joining her in “the single life”; a prospect made possible the moment Harper discovered that Chris, her best friend’s husband, had contracted the Shrinking Disease. Evelyn and Harper had drifted apart since the marriage and Harper wasn’t going to let this opportunity slip away; an opportunity to mend their relationship and get her best friend back. All she had to do was break up Evelyn’s marriage.

This task proved easier than Harper anticipated. Every few days, Harper would think up an excuse to visit Evelyn’s house. . . often dropping by completely unannounced for some mundane reason which barely masked her true intention. In truth, she wanted to see how much smaller Chris had gotten since the last time she saw him; openly remarking about how short he was becoming and even directing subtle slights against his authority as the man of the household. To help matters further along, Harper would occasionally ask Evelyn for intimate details about her increasingly unsatisfied sex life, echoing and amplifying the growing inadequacies of her husband with every conversation while reminding her that she could do so much better.

Eventually, when the little man became small enough that it was safe to do so, Harper began to insist that the couple stand back-to-back to measure his height against hers. Each time Harper measured the shrinking man against his wife, she would pull out her cell phone and snap a few pictures for social media, much to his chagrin, while both women laughed raucously.

When one goes to Harper’s account and selects the “Evelyn + Chris” photo album, the first picture they see is of a child-sized man standing at waist level to his wife, head bowed and looking dejected while draped in clothing clearly cut for a juvenile. If you scroll forward, you will see a number of similar photos, each showing a smaller man looking more pitiful than the last. In the final picture, the little man is completely naked and standing no taller than his wife’s high-heeled pumps. But by this time, Chris and Evelyn weren’t really married. At least not in any real sense.
