Description
It is the hair on your arms standing up on end.It is the goosebumps, the eerie chill, the distrust of the dark shadows in a room.
It is the urge to shut your eyes and bury under the covers,
to cover your eyes only to peek through the slits.
It is what makes you check that all the doors are locked,
switch on the closet light,
feel beneath the bed.
It is your heart racing and forcing blood to pulse and throb
in your neck, your ears, your head.
It is balancing on the balls of your feet,
crouching in the deep darkness,
the full moon in the eerily starless night.
It is the sweat on your forehead and dripping down your back,
the grotesque images of a nightmare,
your eyes darting throughout a room.
It is the adrenaline that pushes you to run the whole way home,
to switch on the light and pant against the door.
IT is the soft scratch on the window,
the harsh bang on the door,
the blood curdling scream when an unexpected visitor grabs you from the darkness.
It is the cold sweat you awake in from the cruel and brutal nightmare.
It is the walls closing in,
the floor falling out,
the eyes in the windows,
a spider in your bed.
Fear. The very word has an edge to it.
It whispers "sweet dreams,"
covers your mouth,
and drags you down into the cold abyss.
