Description
The weitu (Korean word for “Micro ostrich”) is a small duopod which takes the role of Earth’s jerboas. It is found in the deserts of Hansuen. Its body measures up to 15 cm (6 in) in length and 14 cm (5.5 in) in shoulder height.
Living a solitary lifestyle, the weitu is both crepuscular (active at twilight) and nocturnal (active at night). During the day, it digs itself a burrow with its clawed feet, purposely to escape heat and predators. During rainy seasons, it’ll also dig itself a tunnel to avoid flooding. When twilight or night falls, it evacuates its burrow to forage for food.
Outside from its tan plumage to blend in with its surroundings, the weitu has long translucent sensory hairs which is used to navigate through the darkness when search for food.
The diet of a weitu consists of seeds and various types of plant matter that is present in its desert habitat. It never actually drinks water in its life, but neither does it become dehydrated because of it, since the food it eats have enough moisture to hydrate itself.
The weitu’s locomotion is similar to Earth’s ostriches, hence the meaning of its Korean name, mainly involving sprinting and running, but also moving in a zig zag direction in an effort to confuse a predator. When being chased, it can sprint up to 15 miles per hour.
