"Toby is an old-fashioned steam tram who works on the Ffarquhar Branch with his old faithful coach, Henrietta. He's a wise and kindhearted engine who is a friend to many, acting as a mentor to some, always willing to share his wisdom and knowledge with the other engines whenever they need it.

He may not be a strong fellow, and despite his advanced age, he's a hardworking and experienced engine, especially when it comes to running branch lines and, as the Fat Controller puts it, "what Toby doesn't know about branch line problems isn't worth knowing." He's careful with every job he undertakes, controlling the trucks, resulting in him rarely having any accidents.

While Toby is always ready to work hard without any fuss, he can sometimes be a bit temperamental when dealing with young and experienced engines when they test his patience, especially when they act full of themselves and make things more difficult for him; just ask Mavis and Daisy. However, work at the quarry line often soothes off his moods without any cause of grief to anyone, except Henrietta."
