Description [The Ancient Greeks] saw the future as something that came upon them from behind their backs with the past receding away before their eyes.

When you think about it, that's a more accurate metaphor than our present one. Who really can face the future? All you can do is project from the past, even when the past shows that such projections are often wrong. And who really can forget the past? What else is there to know?

~ Robert M. Pirsig,
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Afterword)

(One of my favourite books.)

Trying images without borders. I think they probably present better on dA without borders (not so on Flickr IMHO).

Beautiful colors, this is a really nice picture. Really shows the mood well. Kinda makes me want to know the story behind this place.

Thanks.

Not much story to tell (in the image), as far as I'm aware. This is just a survey marker on the Central Coast, NSW Australia.

If you're referring to the quote, it's among Robert Pirsig's thoughts in the Afterword at the end of Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which is a fantastic book. It does take a little effort to read, because if you look past the surface story of a road trip through America you'll see it's mostly Robert's musings about "quality" and goes into a fair bit of philosophy, particularly with reference to the ancient Greek philosophers. But it's well worth the effort. It's kind of become a bit of a cult classic - people often just refer to the book as "Zen" these days.
