Description
[Photo: Captain Duya of Tonpelli and Unknown Mainlander, Annual Athletics Competition, Y2260, colorized]The racing pool had garnered a rather sizable crowd. There were many curio who simply could not spare the time or funds to travel to Tonpelli themselves, so it was the first glimpse many would have of their newly-found cousins. More than that, the rumors of Undyre skill had already spiraled into mythic proportions, but a few game mainlanders had still stepped up to try their paws at the challenge, and more to see the truth for themselves.
There were few places to stand, fewer to sit, as the spectator stands had been well packed for the event. One of the only open spaces happened to surround the new and exuberant Tonpelli judge- not by design, but by necessity. His enthusiasm for mainland sports was by now well established, but had proven woefully unable to prepare the crowds for the sheer, unbridled excitement that quite literally exploded out of him once the pool was in play. Those few who had gamely attempted to brave his presence for the choice seating had left with their ears ringing.
“LET’S GOOOOOO!” Duya hollered into the thoroughly unneeded megaphone, “LET’S SEE YOU THROW UP A WAKE!”
The starting gun popped, and as the competitors dove into the pool, a large, dark form hit the fence, causing the loose boards to shudder, nearly sending Duya tumbling into the dirt below. For a moment, perhaps, he considered sabotage- was it really too much to ask for the so-called Prince to avoid political maneuvers out on the mainland?
Then the form, who would have towered a foot and a half over him had he been on the ground, reared back, and bellowed “COME OOOOOOON, MIKEY! GO GO GO!”
It was… a spectator. Nothing more sinister than opportunistic seating (Although why she chose to stand right next to him when there was room enough for a small battalion of curio to squeeze in around them was anyone’s guess.) Regaining his composure, Duya clicked his megaphone back on again, and continued where he left off- albeit at a moderately more subdued volume. “SWIM, SWIM, SWIM!”
“YOU CAN DO LOUDER THAN THAT!” the spectator roared.
Duya looked at her. She was looking back at him, a manic grin stretched across her face, and panting a bit, having apparently run here from- who knew where. She giggled. He couldn’t help but return the grin. “You know… I think you’re right.” He cranked the megaphone up a few notches.
“Eyy, that’s cheating,” she chided, but if it really bothered her, Duya couldn’t tell. She turned back immediately to the competition, and took a breath, “LET’S GO MIKEYYYYYY!”
“GOOOOO!” Duya roared in turn. The megaphone screeched, and he could almost swear he felt it vibrate through his ribs.
The spectator shook her head, long hair loops flapping against her face, but she remained undeterred, raising her voice to throat-shredding volumes, trading intelligible words for sheer, uncut gusto. To a normal curio, it might have already been infectious, but to someone already as pumped up on adrenaline as Duya, it created almost a feedback loop of impossible enthusiasm that was frankly, distracting from the actual event. There was a click, and a flash- maybe more than one, although neither paid it much mind. Duya dropped his megaphone.
When the first competitor tapped the end of the pool, the two of them erupted into sheer, shrieking glee, an impossibly loud cacophony that was equal parts manic laughter as it was cheer, that didn’t manage to subside until the last curio finished the race, and even then, only simmered into giddy, half-spent giggles.
“I’ll give you the win, Squirt,” Her voice was raspy, but still half-high on excitement, “I oughta go console my loser friend. See you around.” With that, the spectator hopped the fence, and jogged toward the pool, waving down a wet, pink mainlander from the competitors. It gave Duya enough time to catch his breath, and his dignity. Exciting as that was, he still had to announce the winner.

aka Yucca bullies a prominent political figure, calls him names then leaves
Does Yucca know who Duya is? No, not at all, she just wanted a good seat to watch the event from, and have some fun. She probably doesn't even realize he's a judge, just assumes he's some sort of one-man cheerleading squad.
This was an experiment I have mixed feelings about. Mostly I was gripped with the realization that Yucca and Duya NEEDED to meet and be Too Much together, just for a moment. I also love the idea that Yucca is just There in a photo but was never considered important enough to record her name. Lost to time /shrug.
