Description
This one's definitely not without inspiration. I'd seen my share of Vietnam films, from action candy to epic, from Rambo to Platoon, but this piece arose from my recently viewing two in particular; "Born On The Forth Of July" and "The Deer Hunter". There's something profoundly effective about both of these, which somehow conjured this image. On the immediate, I suppose it's the way that the films convey that war in general (and perhaps this war more than some) erodes the souls of its participants. That's my shot at it. The title is inspired by the Cranberries' song of similar title. Those who've heard it likely understand the connection.Related content

One film that always comes to mind whenever I think of the Vietnam war is "Full Metal Jacket"... It's the first-half of the film that I always found memorable, but the whole film is pretty good.
Awesome pic~

I'm just going to have to sit down and watch that one, because every other attempt I've made to see it has met with distraction, and I'm sure I've missed out on the first part, since I'm always hearing about R. Lee Ermey's(sic) super-abrasive drill sergeant. It's just crazy considering that I've seen most of Stanley Kubrick's other films...

I'd definitely recommend the film. What's sort of crazy about R Lee Ermey's performance is that while it is great, most of it was unscripted... But I heard he used to be a real drill instructor, and that's sorta frightening, after seeing his performance in this film. lol

Well, I finally got around to sitting down and watching FMJ--I didn't really realize the cast outside of Ermey,Modine, and the perennially-creepy D'Onofrio. It reminded me of how much I miss Dorian Harewood (another one who did lots of fine voice acting). Kubrick had that otherworldly style, though. He truly made both basic training and '60s Vietnam seem like another planet.

Glad you enjoyed it. Honestly, it's another one of those films I've been meaning to sit down and watch again... then again, I have a lot of movies like that on my list. lol

Oh, well, I don't think it's possible to *enjoy* a Kubrick film, per se, but he's never failed to interest. That's for sure. Perhaps he had something in common with Salvador Dali in knowing just how to disturb us.

Ahh, okay. I wasn't exactly sure if you enjoyed it or not, so I took a stab at the dark. You've definitely got the grossed-out part right though... Some images in that film was quite grueling (both the in-training half and vietnam stuff). Personally, I think R. Lee Ermey steals the first half of the movie... which is why most people probably remember the first half so well.
But regardless, I'm glad to see you were able to watch the film though... Now, that just leaves me and the multiple recommendations that I need to watch (Incredibles, Despicable Me, etc., etc., etc.)
