hi there! i'm from   and i'd like to critique your work here.

first thing: there is a technical problem where, if you zoom into the piece, the darks get a lot lighter. maybe you worked on an awkwardly transparent canvas? either way, i will be critiquing the piece while it is not zoomed in.

however, i'll start off by saying: this is QUITE a gorgeous study--you really know how to capture how light hits skin and wraps around the face. the blocks of lights and darks here build the character's masculine face well; the neck, however, feels a little flat. i'm not sure if you wanted to only focus on the face or the shoulders-up on this piece, since all the detail is on the face and the neck and shoulders are brushed in, but i do understand if that is what you were aiming for. next time i would suggest cropping the image so it doesn't give attention to the less detailed parts!

the highlight on the top lip is a little bit too bright, maybe dulling it down to a darker shade will make it more suitable? it's also hard to critique a study without seeing the original photo you studied from, so sorry if my critique seems a little mislead  from what the drawing shows, it looks like the source of light is coming from front and to the side of the character, yet the chest and the muscle between the neck and shoulder is too darker to be consistent with that light source. i would suggest dabbing over the dark gray on his shoulder with a lighter value.

it's also important to step back from what you're drawing and look at it from afar. when i do this. i see that the shoulders are too close together. broadening them would fix this!

overall: this is a lovely study and i encourage you to continue these studies because this one is astonishing in the sense of values and form study. good work!

Thank you so much, this critique will help me a lot!
Indeed, there's a weird zoom issue , it must be a problem with DA (if you just take the image on a new page, you can zoom freely)

The original image is this one: ilarge.lisimg.com/image/610561… (I had so much  trouble to re-find it )

you're right! I have many problems with the neck and the shoulders area. I drew a lot of anime-like characters for a long time and I'm trying to learn realism, I'll have to make a lot of anatomy studies I guess ~

Thank you so much for taking the time to critique this study

ah, it's no problem at all! i'm glad to give critique when i can ;u;

oh and thank you for linking the original pic! it does help to have it around if one is critiquing a study, lol

i'm glad i helped you in this, keep on drawing! i'd love to see more!

I'd say the ear looks a bit flat, the transition from the neck to his trap is awakward, and to the right of his Adam's apple looks conjoined or incomplete.
