Description Ah the Goblyn Queen, from a time when I could pick up an X-Book and actually know who was who and what was going on.

The Inferno storyline is pretty much where I got serious about collecting comics and of course the Uncanny X-Men were at the top of the list. Silvestri's and Green's work on that book coupled with the then captivating writing by Claremont (not to mention Orzechowski's awesome hand-lettering which STILL beats any digital font) filled my formative years with great adventures.

Because of all that I've got a soft spot for Madelyne, Sinister, N'astirh, S'ym, Magick, and all the other kooky characters running around fighting Hell on Earth back then.

You kids wouldn't understand...

Drawn on 11"x14" Recycled Bristol using a 2F lead. Inked with Microns and brush with some Speedball ink. Acrylic White for touch-ups since I is messy.

Total time from layout to finish is approx. two and a half hours thanks to AOTS and some Degrassi.

If you feel like coloring it please hit the download button and knock yourself out. My only rule is that when it's uploaded ANYWHERE online I get a link to it so I can check it out.

If you'd like to take a peek at the sloppy pencils pop on over to my sketchblog Zombies Love Comics .

Madelyne Pryor aka The Goblyn Queen belongs to the groovy cats you and I know as Marvel and those demons belong to her so it's all good.

You know, I understand that originally Madelyne WASN'T Jean's clone. It was just a freak coincidence that she looked like Jean.

I know that Claremont originally wanted for Cyclops to retire from active duty with the X-Men and Maddy was a way for him to do so until they brought Jean back from the dead.

From what I remember it caused quite a stir with Cyclops looking like a total jerkstore for abandoning wife and child for a resurrected on again off again girlfriend.

I don't think Claremont meant for her to be a clone in the first place but it was a way to maybe write her out of the story with the whole Inferno thing? I'm sure there's resources online that are more in-depth and concise and I could be totally wrong...it was quite a few years ago.

Oh I know about all that.

It doesn't really help Scott's case that he later begins cheating on Jean with Emma Frost, a woman who actually HELPED "Jean" go crazy in the first place. Back when we thought it was Jean. Still, Emma's intent was clear.

I remember (unsuccessfully) trying to collect all the Inferno issues. I also remember Madelyne's underboob (hey, I was in middle school).

Nice drawing.

That is an awesome drawing. There's so much energy in your stuff.

But- you knew what was going on in Inferno? I was so lost... lol

Thanks Daniel! I'm still waiting to see what you've been up to, you gotta give me a monthly or at least a cool sketchbook for me to drool over.

Yeah, Inferno wasn't as bad as some of the other crossovers plus I was younger and could devote more time to stuff like comic book events. Now I don't even know what's going on in the monthly books because I'm so out of touch with everything it's not even funny.

i do understan you man, i also started picking up uncanny xmen and spiderman BEFORE the ongslaugh event, i really liked the jobs of mike wieringo, joe MAD, the kubert brothers and even bachalo on its beginnings... so uhm ... yeah!

I guess everyone has a favorite period to all the comic titles out there but some of the stuff they do makes you scratch your head sometimes trying to figure out where it's all going.

I really liked Mad's run on the book and the Kuberts especially Adam on Wolverine as he was trying some funky stuff on that book. Bachalo was okay, he's another fave artist of mine but I kept wanting him to do another Death story for some reason. His AOA stuff was groovy though.

"Inferno" kicked ass, if only for those crossover issues where Daredevil fought a possessed vaccuum cleaner and a dentist who ate a truck. I'm making neither of those up--it was a gloriously messed-up crossover.

Excellent work! You can never go wrong with the Goblin Queen outfit, can you? Love the pose and expression here--it's totally badass. I also like the way you have it from an overhead angle--it's an unusual compositional choice. Excellent work! Very well done!

It kicked ass indeed! My favorite panel in that whole mess was by Silvestri and it had a fire-hydrant beating up on a little dog while yelling "Don't ever do that again!" That was pure gold.

The perspective is a bit wonky but I was hoping I pulled it off enough to make it work. Glad ya liked, thanks!

Gunmetalblack In reply to stalk [2009-08-14 15:24:48 +0000 UTC]

I think a lot of artists added in little bits of business like that. I remember one book where a mailbox was eating someone's hand, yelling "INSUFFICIENT POSTAGE!" Clearly, a lot of artists were working stuff out during that crossover.

I don't think it's that wonky, really, and I think you dd pull it off enough to make it work. And you're welcome!

Oh I understand, I understand perfectly. I'm a little out-of-date on the X-verse myself right now, have been for a while ... but I picked up New X-Men: Childhood's End book 5 recently and seeing Darkchylde kinda took me back.

This is cool, BTW. I could be tempted to have a crack at this sometime, actually ...

I've been trying to get back into the whole X-Thing but it's a bit daunting with all the characters running around now. Seeing some of the old characters coming back (again) helps a bit though, it's nice to see some familiar faces.

Anytime you feel like taking a stab at some colors have at it, thanks!

Frickin sweet man...I totally get you on the "when i used too pick up any X-book and know who was who..." LOL! It makes me sound ancient whenever i mention the "Jim Lee era" or the 90's X-MEN...with all the new x-men popping up like pokemon it's hard to keep track of who's the kid of who or cousin of this person...I think i just confused myself in my own comment...oh well AWESOME PIC!

Yeah I feel ya on all the mutants running around considering not too long ago Wanda made sure there were to be "No more mutants!" However there seems to be more of them now than ever!

Of course the X-Folks probably retconned that already too and I just didn't notice.
