Description
One night, I was up ridiculously late, and I was inspired by the stark, rich visual poetry of barren branches silhouetted against a clear predawn sky.I wanted to create something like that in my next symmetrical pattern, and this was the result.
This pattern is available on coffee mugs, blankets, backpacks and more in my Society6 store and my RedBubble store . You can see some examples of the available products here: www.deviantart.com/stephobrien…
If you want to learn how to draw patterns like this, check out my tutorial here .
You'd think drawing all these snowflakes would be slowing down production of Just Cause , but it's actually sped it up considerably; after only 19 days of work, I'm just two panels away from finishing the next 53-panel page.
Having this bit of variety helps to extend my attention span and keep me from getting bored of drawing the same type of thing all the time, which has increased the amount of time I spend on my art overall.
Because I'm drawing the snowflakes at such high resolution, it often takes Krita so long to complete each stroke that I have time to work on my comic in Photoshop while I'm waiting for it to load.
All in all, I'm really glad I discovered this new hobby.

Hi, another ProjectComment commentor here:
First off: wow! I'm always impressed by people who can have such clean, clear shapes or lines. The pattern is beautiful, just the right mix of flowing, graceful curves (especially on the border) and the more geometric shapes that create that outward-spreading effect. I just with I could see more of it!
I think that's really the only issue here; that background. Someone below said that they thought it was missing something, and I think what's missing is a focal point, and that's entirely because of the value balance of the image. By that, I mean that the dark purple background and the black blend too well together, which makes the soft clouds (or wind patterns? I'm not sure.) stand out more than the pattern, which I'm pretty sure wasn't what you were aiming for. If you wanted to keep the pattern a nice, solid black, without changing the color of the background because it's clearly meant to be a night sky, I have a few suggestions:
1) Create a bright value in the center of the snowflake. Something that radiates out and all around it, or at least around its edges, so it stands out from the rest of the sky. It doesn't have to be profoundly brighter, either, just a bit brighter (and/or less saturated) than the clouds.
2) Frame the edges of the snowflake (and perhaps the edge patterns as well) with a lighter value, but not necessarily light up the whole back of the flake (though that could wind up drawing too much attention to the outer shapes and distract from the real magic- the patterns themselves. So I'd say be careful with this one). The stars up top look beautiful – maybe you could use them as kind of a dotted frame around some of the areas you want more focus on?
Either way, I'm loving it. Good job. :3

Thank you very much for the detailed compliments and suggestions! I like your ideas, and while I don't tend to go back and tinker with completed art, I'll keep your advice in mind for future instances when there's a risk that the snowflake will blend in or get overshadowed by part of the background.
I really appreciate you taking the time to figure this out and provide specific, actionable advice!

Greetings, I am coming to you from Project Comments.
I must first of all that I am impressed with the sort of theming you went for with this snowflake. Adding a gothic twist to the beauty of such a delicate creation is an interesting idea and I personally believe you have done well to create it. The intricate patterns and shapes both inside and outside the snowflake are quite impressive, even more so considering you seem to have copied them brilliantly from one side to another. As for the design itself, I have seen a few cathedrals that both utilize and were inspired by gothic architecture and the pattern on the snowflake looks like it could be on a stained glass window. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it was to work through the patterns and small details on the thing.
Something else that I enjoy is the boarder around the picture. I can't quite describe it, but the darkness in those corners adds something to the picture that just makes it easier to enjoy the snowflake.
I do have one small pang against the picture, but I think it has more to do with personnel preferences than the actual work. I realize that this picture is a silhouette and that would explain the complete lack of color except for the night sky. However, even with the blues behind it, that doesn't stop much of the black from mixing between itself and becoming harder to see as a result. This is rather unfortunate as I can see the more subtle cuts and designs within the snowflake, but their beauty becomes more muddled as I sometimes have to squint to follow them.

Thank you so much for the detailed compliments and feedback! I'm sorry it took me so long to reply; between a frantically busy month and a sudden deluge of comments, I've fallen way behind. >_<
I probably could've stood to make the sky behind the snowflake a bit brighter. I have pretty keen eyesight when it comes to telling shades apart, so sometimes I made differences in shade too subtle.

I like this ok.
But it seems like it's missing something.
Thought I don't know what. I'm not well educated when it comes to this kind of art.

I think it may be stars,
you may need more stars.
But I'm not sure.

Whoa... It even looks like a dark steering wheel of a pirate ship because of the shape. Not bad!

Mysterious... MMy first thought was lace and peacock feathers, but branches on early dawn sky are an option too and it is fantastic.

Lace and peacock feathers certainly works too. It wasn't so much the shape of the branches I was trying to imitate, but the stark beauty of their blackness against the night sky.
