Description This abstract image is how a lot of my paintings look before I begin to add the specific details to ground them in some kind of reality.

I liked how this one looked at this stage, and since I never went any further with the painting, I've decided to just post it in its present form

How long do you normally spend on this phase? I can never get really good digital painting down and I normally try to start this same way. I have been thinking I spend too much time on it and it makes the colours and image muddy later on, but you seem to have done more still and prodoced really stark contrasts and forms.

Id really like to be able to do it like you

I have found - overall - that the trick is to work quickly so the artwork keeps a level of spontaneous feeling. I use multiple layers, and slide things around to see what happens. If something looks promising, I will save a "copy merged" version as a separate file. I will make various versions of an image like this, and sometimes set them aside for months. Then, if I see something that "jumps" out at me, I'll try to follow that inspiration and make some sense of it as a final painting.

Y'know, even without more detail it still works for me. It definitely evokes those abstracts from 60's SF paperback covers

I think in a lot of cases the classic book covers were artists exploring abstract art - and probably driving the art director insane

I dunno. I bet back then the AD's expectations (and demands from marketing) weren't as extreme. They were probably happy to get something colorful for the cover, period. Ah, those were the days (I bet...though I was still doing crayon and pencil when I wasn't pushing my Matchboxes around... .

Someone once told me: "The marketing people destroy everything they come into contact with; it doesn't matter what it is, they'll ruin it"

From what I can see, that has turned out to be entirely true...

It is a strange picture Depending on when I look at it, I see different things. It's often how I start a more finished painting
