Incredible. I was introduced to Tool during a long, strange trip with two of my best friends. We listened to Lateralus, and the album kind of changed my life. I've since listened to a few of their albums, and 10,000 Days is simply fantastic. I feel like Right In Two is one of the more powerful tracks on the album, and I also think you did a great job of interpreting it. It's interesting to see how you've created these seemingly universal, cosmic bodies that are somehow human but decidedly different in some way--maybe they are projections of our own consciousness? The way they seemingly morph into existence from the background, the white light, and they see the wrongs of the world, of history, like silent but powerful judges... it really strikes me.
I feel like you've followed a very strong vision and manifest an important message that speaks in a language that isn't conveyed through words. Excuse the rambling... I simply love this work. Congratulations on this stunning piece.

Thanks for the feedback, I rather enjoy stories and ramblings. Tool changed my life as well. I got to see them once and it was very powerful.
I haven't been painting as much though as it seems i'm trying to follow in Tool's footsteps with music. I hope to bring real visions into reality when I have more time on my hands, no "job"!
Thanks for your words.

Haha good response. Congradulations meat bag, your distribution of meat jelly registers a considerable desirable vessel for information via squiggly dna packets.
But yer perdy soul shines through.
Oh i wanna hit on girls with a bunch of aliens and tell her I dig her meat geometry, her skin is so nice, it must be at least 90% adequately hydrated and abundant in mineral deposits.
And she'll be all like "oh baby."

Lo! Who does not love bunches of aliens?

haha.

Why thank you. And she absolutely would. And all of us, derbag, ferdus and goymor would be like, "incorrect, it is you who is the likeness of an infant 'baby'." "Yes, she will leak sodium hydrate from her occular sockets when we are finished depositing our dna in her reproductive chambers. Yes. In the back room'
High tentactle fives all around.
And she'd be like 'wow that's so interesting, that's just what a woman wants to hear. You guys are the coolest, and so fertile. Let's go then!"
"Innnnndeeeed" - wiggles away.
Oh god dammit to think i'm missin out on that cuz I don't have any alien friends. Getting abducted and experimented on doesn't count as a friendship either but sounds like a good date!

Ha! "Likeness of infant 'baby'"
Absolutely, she would.
The back room? Why not the front????
All the tentacles, in fact.
And so fertile. haha!
Oh such comedy and truth in one.
Wiggling away sounds god awful, or, Cthulhu awful rather.
Perhaps there is a social networking site designed for the ability to hold potential of making alien friends!

I once had this online dating profile and I got tired of it so I changed my picture to a really realistic one of an alien grey, the one from close encounters. I was like 117 years old, said all my kids were grown up n all thay. Said "we" as a race were looking for willing genetics, that our race was dieing. The profile filled out so perfectly. "Putting serious effort to find somebody" it had it all. But because I was 117 only one girl saw it! . But she loved it.
Yeah they should put a site like that up. Maybe they have one and its hidden from google. You gotta also use a keyboard with alien letters.
I'd love to message some 100 foot octopus woman and email her pictures of my dick. Cuz that's what you do on those sites apparently. I'm sure you've received a few. But were they alien? I doubt it! Keep lookin', there's all kinds of reproductive information dispersing appendages of all shapes out there for you!! And who would offer more security than some being with a spaceship and like a billion space bucks? It would never be around though, a re dead beat and long distance relationship. Only showing up in the middle of the night from a beam of light in your bedroom, drooling over your bed before showering you with a cloud of spores then teleporting away to disect your kids.
Sounds like a keeper. But will you be compatible? Its planet has different signs!

I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I really must apologize twice.
I was a little spaced out and tired, finding the end of my day.
So, reading this message was so random and odd.
I just burst out laughing, I almost died, or burst my spleen...not sure.
I feel like that alien is called Beeblebrox, from the vicinity of Betelgeuse.
He is a real douche, but more than comical.
He is the galactic president, mainly known for stealing the prized ship "The Heart Of Gold",Β
as well as kidnapping himself along with it.
His minor achievements:Β Zaphod invented the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. He was voted "Worst Dressed Sentient Being in the Known Universe" seven consecutive times. He's been described as "the bestBang Β since the Big One" byΒ Eccentrica Galumbits, and as "one hoopy frood" by others.
Also, which I find more than humorous when compared with your last statement:
He stopped at planet Earth (Β SectorΒ ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha ), To Pick up Trisha McMillion literally using the line
"Want a ride on my spaceship?" (in which he was quite serious).

Yeah you'd do 'em admit it.
Everyone wants to date an alien.
Can't get enough of that shower of spores. All over your body, til one takes root in your spleen and becomes a giant stinky mushroom until it pops one day and your fungus offspring come out, maybe you just gave birth? They also kinda look like that shit from super mario brothers, but with your face, and instead of "mama mama", they say "kill me". With fire. Or anything, just do it now.

Ahh, got it- I have and like that song! I would suspect that angels (or any immortal or advanced species) would have a vastly different world/life perspective than us, and their seeing the bigger picture (and what they'd learn from it might make them seem a bit callous. Though traditionally they are depicted as these highly compassionate beings it doesn't mean that they would necessarily intervene into our struggles- as that would rob us of growing and learning what were here to learn.

Yeah exactly my thoughts. I wanted to make something unrelatable to humans. I try to remove familiar elements to my art to bring something new and mysterious. Like i try not to paint stars because it gives a familiar idea of space bur i prefer the black void because it has a feeling of being lost, helpless, nowhere, and you cant pinpoint where in the universe the scene is supposed to be happeninf. I also try to avoid straight lines except in this one. I want to make everything feel liquid and just adds to the difficulty if trying to put it in a box as our left brains want to.
With this one i wanted the beings to look like they were made of black oil, forming out of the void that isnt so empty but terrifyingy mysteriously full of life, yet at the same time convey no threat. Its just a statement of mystery, so weir and different that it's scary to humans yet curious. Thats how i feel about the universe. I think surely if i had a consciousness after death it would not think like a human, think in english, have a gender or set form. I don't know, but my art reflects how i kinda feel about letting the human experience go, or perhaps evolve for that matter.
Thanks for th comments, i enjoy them.

This is the kind of conversation that I'd hope to have on DA, though it rarely happens. Not that I am knocking "cool" comments, as anything is appreciated and valued. I get the sense, at least on some levels, that we are both using our art as a tool to explore our ideas- the painting process is a form of meditation or contemplation for what's on our minds. I don't mean to speak for you, but it's a hunch.
I can appreciate and relate to much of what you've said, and with each piece I see what is successful and try to integrate the lesson into the subsequent pieces. I must confess that I am prone to adding stars to my work, I suppose it is to convey vastness and the Lovecraftian sense of our smallness. The blackness, however, is an interesting idea! To me it makes it seem more like an interior space, as that is where I am most accustomed to experiencing total blackness. It does seem like there are some stars in your painting (and a large star/sun), at least that's how I read it- though I've felt that as long as there are no obviously identifiable constellations then it could be billions of light years away. That in itself could be unsettling, if that's the goal.
I've yet to attempt depiction of angels, at least in some time. On one hand I might think to depict them in a way that would comfort the viewer and match our expectations, so they might shape-shift for that purpose (kind of like the end of the movie 'Contact', if you've seen it). However, in your painting I don't get the sense that they are unobserved and not interacting with humans- so this could be their true form. Come to think of it, I could see any non-humanoid appearance being unsettling to many people, seeing how fearful they can be of some animals.

SteveGriffith In reply to nightserpent [2012-11-14 17:51:24 +0000 UTC]
It's interesting how you interpretted it that way. A lot of the time i think my subconscious knows this and tells me to paint those multi-interpretational things. I basically do what a voice in my head says sometimes without question while painting, its fun to see what it knows. This painting the stars were meant to be light particles and the sun was my attempt at a portal from which some or all of the scene is eminating from, giving more mystery. I had thought of making that big portal the sun and actually putting a giang moon and venus in there but felt it would take away a bit and also give too much familiarity. This painting used to be bigger and was meant to imply the earth here as a hologram to the beings. On the othef hand i wanted to also give this sense that thinking in size and dimension in terms of space is limiting and there could very well be giant beings in another dimensional layered over us watching and calculating our every move. Painting is absolutely a meditation for me. I'm really into the psychology, subliminals and simple lookinv symbols that look like a well crafted dream mirroring our minds from reality. The concept and doing it is the easy part but the real difficulty and enjoyment for me is figuring out a good hypnotizing yet simple appearing way to express it. I hope with art i can introduce complicated concepts in beautiful and non ego threatening ways, to do what my words can't and strike at the subconscious, the soul. And i can just say oh you know, i just wanted to paint something colourful.
Nice gallery btw! I like your distorted ones and the darkness of it. The dark is part of life, since my first experiences with strong psychedelics i knew i wanted to convey the mystery, the fear from our own ignorance, and yet the sheer beauty of even the darkest spaces. I think us humans dig on abuse a bit, horror and i can try and show something philosophical in a messed up and bad ass way. I hope to induce at leasg one seisure or mental breakdown in a viewer. Hahah
