Quickie tutorial:
- Cheap Acrylic paints (mix your own gray with black and white)
- stick the back end of a pen or paintbrush in the hole under the back hoof. With the pony on a stick, you don't touch the paint and mess it up or get messy. Let it dry by putting the stick in a mug or heavy cup with the pony sticking out the top.
- Use a yarn needle or sharp tip brush for eyes and cutie mark
- Give the Yellow Mane/tail a few coats of yellow so you can't see the original color underneath
- Let the eyes and cutie mark dry in between each color layer (i.e. eye white, dry, yellow retinas, dry, black pupils and eyelashes, dry, white eye reflections, dry)
- Have a paper towel ready to wipe away mistakes before they dry (thus why you should wait between coats/colors).

Hope that helps

what paint did you use?
and how did you get such fine detail into to the eyes? did you use a pen or a brush?

I use Kato PolyClay and basic Wal-Mart acrylic paint. The paint is mildly flexible and rubbery like the pony plastics when dried.
I use a few brushes (one thin pointy brush with a very tiny tip, one flat pointy brush, and one that's like a calligraphy brush).
Also for the eyes and cutie mark detailing, I use a yarn needle (bigger less sharp than a sewing needle).

Do you find Kato PolyClay to work better then clays like Sculpey clay? and is it a clay that you would need to bake or just let dry on its own?

thank you. :3
I've been wanting to make my own Mlp OC for a while know but I didn't want to have to mess with putting real/fake hair on the toy. most people wouldn't answer my question when I ask about how they made thair ponies but you've been really nice and helpful. thank you.

I've only worked with Kato PolyClay before for this type of project. I'm not sure how the colored Sculpey II polclay works, and I've only worked with "Super Sculpey" before on one other project: [link]
The Super Sculpey and the Kato PolyClay don't air dry (which is great if you have a big/long project since you can leave it out and come back whenever you want and continue working). The Kato has sort of a bouncy rubbery feel when baked. It doesn't really crack when baked, but it can crumble or break apart, so make sure it's firmly attached and sculpted well to your pony before baking (kneeding it well before use helps too).

You are very welcome. Some people don't want to be bothered to help others with tips. Also, Like myself, some people make money on the side with custom toys and sculpting. Thus some don't like to give out their "trade secrets" and it's their right to deny people the info. However, since most of it can be found in online tutorials or figured out with a little experimenting, I personally see no reason why my info can't be shared. Weather you were "competition" of just a casual artist (unless it's some technique that I alone held the key secret to... and I don't know anything like that ), I'm always happy to share any info I can to help.

Let me know if you have anymore questions. Always happy to help.

Think it's possible to make a normal sized mlp derpy figure?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stitchfan In reply to ZekroRaptor [2011-12-27 00:53:45 +0000 UTC]

I have 2 brand new (unopened) Normal-sized Pegusi in stock. One is Rainbow Dash and the other is Fluttershy.
I've never Customized one of the normal sized ones before, though I plan on making Rainbow dash into a Wonderbolt and we'll see about the other two.

i believe there are tutorials on dA on how to customize normal sized pony figures.

Stitchfan In reply to ZekroRaptor [2011-12-29 01:47:58 +0000 UTC]

My only concern is the hair. I have 2 options:
1. Pain around the brushable hair.
2. Destroy the brushable hair and sculpt solid hair.

Option 2 is dodgy because I don't know if the normal sized ponies can withstand the polyclay baking temperature of 350*F for 10 minutes (the small ponies can handle the heat with no damaging effects). Option 1 is hard because paint could ruin the hair.

I'll look into it. Thankss
