HellRiden - 355/760 HP

SHORT STORY by AthenaCykes

Margaret felt bad about hunting seals, she really did. They were so cute and fat, but hey, it was a living. She sat upon Reina’s back, with Killian at her side, while Maverick trailed behind, intimidated by Reina’s sharp barks, sage follow directly behind them quietly, and little dipper bounded up to their left, excited to see these seals. Reina had taken up a fairly quick pace, as they’d started off far later than they should have, and the sun was already beginning to fall lower and lower in the sky, washing over the fields in a handsome light gold which was nice to look at, but also meant it would be night soon. And unless they wanted to trudge home, wet and cold, in the dark, then they had to move quickly. Killian kept pace with Reina easily, and Little DIpper kept bouncing off ahead of them playfully, getting distracted, and getting passed before bouncing ahead again. Maverick was following them as well, but staying much closer to Killian than Reina, as he had heard that Reina did not like male tokotas one bit, and he was more than a little bit timid in nature- if at all possible, he was going to try to avoid incurring her wrath. Sage was behind the others by quite a ways, and she seemed rather nervous about hunting the seals. Maverick kept running back and nudging her to hurry up when she fell too far behind. It took them longer than Margaret would have liked, but when they got near the pond, there was still lightm and it was still warm enough to justify getting in the water without risking freezing to death. Margaret had heard rumors of there being seals in this pond, and it was much closer to her usual hangout spots than the distant sea- Margaret never was much of one for the ocean, so she was going to stick to seal filled ponds in grassy fields, and enjoy the luxury of not have to worry about removing the sand from her boots for ages after wards. Everyone gathered around the pond, gentle nudges, trying to see something until- yes, there it was! Killian couldn’t help herself, it seemed, and jumped straight into the pond after the tiny black seal head that had popped up. She certainly hadn’t expected it to be so fast, she had to say. Little dipper seemed a little bit confused as to what was going on, but jumped into the water following her. All Margaret could do was put her head in her hands as the two in the water floundered around and Sage, Reina, and Maverick looked at her expectantly. She’d been planning on trying to lure the seals out of the water where they’d be slower than the tokotas, and easier to catch, but it looked like what wasn’t gonna happen now. So she simply shook her head and threw her arms out forward, over the water, yelling “Go get ‘em, you guys!” Reina hopped into the water immediately, sharply splashing the recently un submerged Killian, who carried a seal proudly in her jaws. Maverick jumped in too, keeping his distance from the others. Sage gave Margaret a nervous look as she looked from the water and then back to her handler with unease on her face. Margaret walked over to her, and gave her mane a gentle pat which convinced the girl to slowly, nervously walk into the water, right as Little Dipper, looking as excited as ever, came out of the water, a small seal hanging limp and bloody in his mouth. Soon, seals seemed to be coming from everywhere- Margaret hadn’t been expecting to find this many, but as she watched splashed and flashes of Manes that came above the surface, she realized that all of the tokotas were helping each other, driving the seals right to one another to try and help them out, and it couldn’t help but bring a smile to her face- their team work was really fantastic. As Reina tossed her second seal up so shore aggressively, Killian got out of the water, shaking herself off, her droplets catching the golden sunlight beautifully. Little Dipper soon followed her, and Maverick returned with a seal in his mouth, as well, Sage got out, as well, shaking off as far away from the others as possible, not wanting to get them wet, and finally, Reina wandered out of the water with yet another seal in her mouth. As Margaret began to count up the seals and distribute them in saddle bags, she smiled. Perhaps they’d left a little later than they should have, ann perhaps not everything had gone according to plan. But judging by the bags stuffed full of seal and the smiles that seemed to be gracing everyone’s faces, including her own, it looked like today had been a pretty big success.
