Lots of nebula brushes. Lots of tweaking the "Hue and Saturation" settings of each of them. A black background. A dark blue layer set to low opacity placed above it. Many different star brushes of different sizes and forms. Other nebula brushes with black as the chosen color. And a custom-made sun for the Antares red giant. Added a small lens flare when I as finished.

It was worth the effort. It looks very realistic, and beautiful. Is there a story behind it, or something planned?

Another author from my "home forum" of Spacebattles.com and I have been putting our heads together for some time now. We're planning to adapt one of his fanfics into an original setting. Antares and the Coalsack Nebula would feature as a location at some point, but that's still far off in the future. At this point it'd basically be like GRRM saying "Oh, X and Y will happen in "A Feast for Crows", but I haven't started writing Book 1 yet. Right now we're setting up what makes the universe run (races, technology, politics), but the actual writing won't start before this year's autumn as we're still both juggling other projects.

Sounds like a fun project. Good luck with it! Images such as this will greatly enhance the story, once it is written.
