Man, I don't know how you do it but your pics just keep getting better and better!! This is probably your best yet! Though I could probably say that about every pic you submit from this point on haha.
Geez, I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll go with what caught my eye first when I watched you work on this over the stream: the condensation on the glasses! I don't know if I've seen you create this effect before, but it came out really brilliantly. The clarity of the drops really come out when this pic is zoomed in on. I mean heck, there's even a circular mark where Stu had his beer set down on the table; that's just insanely good detail!! And it's characteristic of the detail of the rest of the piece.
The characters are fantastic, they're in the prime of their life in both pics really. Lots of shine, they're clean (no gritty stuff like some of your recent pics!). The feathers and fluff on Vera(?) must have taken ages to get right, and the scales are really well-done. I normally expect that level of accuracy of scales from people that have drawn lots of dragons, but with your ache for detail and accuracy, you've hit it just right. Stu seems to have had his detail knob cranked up too, as looks like he has much more obvious whiskers and texture on his nose.
The portraits in the background definitely deserved their own deviation submission, and are an excellent addition of eye candy (good job of keeping the frames behind the characters with photos of badzooks). The glare on the pics is a fantastic touch with the slight fisheye effect. Just a speculation here, but guessing that the expression's on the character's faces in the portraits are somehow expressive of their personalities? Or is it just fun faces? ahah
I like how the mats have a VERY convincing 3D effect to them, especially the one in front of Stu with good ol' Badzooks!
I'm glad you submitted both versions of this haha. It almost could have been a before and after if the order was swapped, but then that's probably why you intentionally put the "normal" photo second as to not be confused. If I was having to choose which one to submit, I would have probably made the same choice of submitting both!

much appreciated bro! always trying to figure out how to do things better, or what can I learn from each pic I do.
that was a first for this pic, made a bunch of observations at local meet ups here at bars. All those times helped me think of extra details to add to make this pic more solid in details. It's pretty fun to figure out how to achieve a texture by looking at reference photos I took.
Back in current day where everything is good, and those hand did take a bit of time to get right since they are something not so familiar to me, but glad it was time well spent on the two of them!
Going out and about helped remind me of those details again and make things a bit more real, and the expressions are a mix of fun one's I've seen online or just plain silly :U
Having the two helps make it a bit of a narrative, when taking photos of people when they are not ready for the camera the first time. Also have it in this order too so they don't immediately come of as being drunk, but more half blinking and yawning. Works well when it's just Stu half blinking, and Kevlar is smiling away.
Cheers again Chandler!!!

I don't know if it does in your browser too, but I love how the thumbnail has the perfect size, so when I scroll with a mousewheel down, the lower picture replaces the upper and vice versa. It creates an illusion that it's an animation and it's moving.
Really nice.

hehe it seems like a fun thing to do. It doesn't do that for me as my mouse wheel moves at smaller spaces, but I did like flicking between layers :]
Thank you!

It might be because of different resolution of your monitor too.
Quite a coincidence, that it had the exact size to the last pixel to do it.

I really like the way you rendered this! Β I want to ask you, how you get to that look? Β It has to be different than just ground up painting.

stucat In reply to ShadowKiwi [2014-01-12 03:39:23 +0000 UTC]
I kinda do my paintings in passes, like in the processes I have in my scraps here. DO the base and light first, then start adding all the other lighting details like bounce, and secondary lighting sources etc and checking values a bunch to helps makes things pop better.
Hope that helps in some way :0

Thank you for the tips, I've been studying that piece for awhile now! Β Your process is great! Β I want to try that approach once. Β It seems slow and deliberate but yielding. Β I think I rush through the steps of painting too much.
Thanks again!

Haha, I love how they only suddenly realize their picture is being taken and are suddenly able to muster up enough sobriety for an actual smile and direct look into the lens in the second shot. Β Definitely a great example of being able to use the same composition and seamlessly edit it just enough that it actually looks completely different at another moment in time.Β The details are astounding as usual, and you certainly don't skimp out when it comes to creative backgrounds.
Way to go.Β I agree with the calls for a DD here, I think it's one well-deserved.

I just like expressions that get taken in the first pic hahaha
Decided to photochop the second one to show that they aren't drunk at the time
Had to bring in some elements from that trip into the pic, and it's those things that help make the image have more life.
Thank you so much again Bowser!!!

The thing is, your anthro art is so incredibly lifelike, and it's also humanizing in a way because it potrays characters in certain scenes like this when you don't go for entirely dynamic action shots.Β You can believe you're sitting right there alongside 'em or even being the one holding the camera snapping the moment to capture in time forever.
Any time dude, you certainly know how to make your viewers smile. :]

I like drawing situations I have been in, or can easily relate to can help bring that experience to the character.
Doing action scenes is rad as well as I love action movies, and watched a ton growing up hahaha (need to do some more later on)
Thanks again Bowser! really appreciate your complements!
