Description
What to say about this piece. First off it is huge! It is a double page spread and fills the two pages edge to edge. I don't know why I do this to myself. So what the heck is it? Good question.
When I was working on the How to Draw Muscle Men book my publisher asked me to expand the subject matter to include some normal sized super heroes rather than all Incredible Hulk massive sized heroes.
So I created this fire character dude. I guess the concept had been kicking around in my head for a long time, because one second he wasn't in my brain and a minute later I had a fully formed idea of who and what he did. But even at that point I didn't have a name. I started playing around with different fire names, researching different compound words that used things like fire, torch, flame, etc. I came across the word torchbearer. This is months after I had decided on using the name Torchbearer Studios for my website. It now fit for not only what I wanted my studio to be about, it also fit perfectly this new character. Fate? Destiny? Kismet? Cheese? Who knows.
Anyways so this character was going to appear in my muscle book, still may, hopefully me and this new publisher can get things worked out.
Then two days ago I get an email about the Stan Lee Foundation create a hero contest. Sounds cool. Then I notice the deadline, I have less than an hour to enter. This is the picture I wanted to enter, but it was only a thought in my head at that point so I had to cobble together something real quick get it colored and up in time to make the contest deadline. So my entry is real real real lame; sort of a Marvel Handbook shot of the character whipped together in no time flat.
But wait there's more. I get an email saying they've extended the contest by a day because their website keeps eating people's entries. NO KIDDING. I must of wrote up my definition 3 or 4 times before it posted and by then my syntax was down to monosyllabic kindergarten words.
So I had an extra day to update my entry. I'm thinking, "All Yah Baby! Now I can do that insane fire dragon pic I got in my head!"
I start on it and then...
Well I received some devastating news. A Marine friend of mine was killed in Afghanistan.
Freak'n sucks. Sucks big time.
So needless to say I just didn't have the resolve to do anything yesterday.
I'll probably color this in the near future, but the funny thing about art is I associate it with whatever I was doing when I drew it. I can look at a page and I know exactly what songs I was listening to when I drew it. So needless to say the memories around this piece just aint all that great.
Anyways my sucky entry into the Stan Lee Foundation create a hero contest is here:

Talenhouse.com's website is buggier than a entomologist convention. Guys really, fix your code.
You can vote for it and I think I win a trip to hang out with Stan Lee and Todd McFarlane or something. They are fun guys. In interviews on the web I can understand Todd perfectly, every time I've talked to him in person my ears can't decipher the Canadian accent. weird.
