I love this and it's amazing, I'm having some trouble though. It's frustrating to no end as well.
I do everything, yet the minute I go to burn it won't work on the layer what so ever. No matter how high I increase it, nor will the dodge. And when I do I have to go to the original layer and even then it doesn't get close to the effect yours shows. Am I doing something wrong? I feel stupid.

Do the dodge on the original layer, you're not doing something wrong. It's my first tutorial, so it may not be the best

Thank you so much.
No, it's not that it's not the best. They are just hard to make and take ages. It works wonders and it's helpful. <3

Good tutorial! One thing I'd suggest, however, is mentioning, when you use the burn/dodge tools, if they're set to Shadows, Midtones, or Highlights, because that will have a large impact on how they work.
