Description Well, I promised it long ago, and here it is. I hope it makes at least some sense.

MS Paint can be persuaded to do this stuff you guys! It's unwise, but it's possible!

Omg... you used MS Paint for the VF comic?? :0 Amazing. So I'm guessing you save the file JPEG instead of PNG. That adds a little 'shade' to the pic. Nice. Thanks for the tips!

wow, i honestly am impressed you can do this on paint, especially the new one... i don't really like it much (but i still use it) since its kind of hard to use, tbh i like the old one alot more : ) but i have a question, what font do you use for comics? if its a secret than you dont really have to reply Β x3

I didn't really understand the part about the bubbles (yes I'm using MSpaint for my comic because I have nothing else.)Β

If the background is red, and I put a bubble and hit the transparent thing, then the bubble will come out as red?

Can't think of an easy way to explain it in words, so here's an example

As a veteran Paint user I'm sure you'll be familiar (and frustrated) with the behavior of selected areas when you try to move them

I think I get it now, a bit. Thank you. If the background is set to red and then the bubble is then made, then selected and taken over and made transparent, I'm guessing the bubble will be transparent and have to be recolored.Β

And yeah, my version of Paint is a pain. I'v tried the eraser thing and a few others that don't seem to be working for my version for some very strange reason. It's incredible how even though I'm almost done with the lineart of the current page, I feel so close to ragequitting, and I don't even do the multi-page layers thing you do. How you manage is beyond me. Again, I applaud you.Β

Are you on Windows 7 or later, and are you using a mouse or a tablet pen? Pen and Touch settings can screw with MS Paint.

I'm using a pen, yeah. And I'm not exactly sure which version of windows this is because I'm not entirely sure if I managed to get it 'upgraded' to 10, but I do know that it's above seven.Β

If you have that circle cursor thing popping up all the time and interfering with your strokes, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Pen and Touch. Under Pen Options, get the settings for Press and Hold - Right-Click, and turn it off.

Make sure "Use the pen button as a right-click equivalent" and "use the top of the pen to erase ink" are both turned on.

Performance should be much improved after that.

I think I've already got most of the settings right. Probably just me, since I'm new to digital. Apart from the fact that I can't really use any other color other than black for the lineart and need to be really careful about stuff, I think it's okay though.Β

Wow, now I see Paint in another way. My respects, I really love VF for the story and colouring, and now that I know how do you colour the pages I think it's even more amazing
Maybe I'll try someday

Not fun at all.

wow, you're definitely something, that's so much work and you make it in such a wonderful quality... i really respect you D:
one question though: do you do the lineart with mouse or with a tablet, 'cause if you do it with mouse, you are god ._.

I use a tablet pen. There's more about the actual drawing aspect in the first part here sulfurbunny.deviantart.com/art…

i personally always loved the pixely ms paint style the comic has x3 even if you ever get another, better program, i really hope you keep that style!!
this really shows that its about the artist not the program^^

Wow, you do this in MS Paint?! I knew it looked a lot like expert use of MS Paint, but I didn't think it was possible that anyone would make an entire comic this good in Paint! Plus, not only are you using MS Paint, you're using one of the harder versions to work with...
Just curious, why use Paint when you have Photoshop? Not that you aren't doing an absolutely amazing job with Paint, but it seems like Photoshop would make everything easier.

sulfurbunny In reply to HikariOkami [2014-05-30 16:49:27 +0000 UTC]

A very very VERY long time ago (before fourth gen existed, that long!) the original idea was to make a parody comic poking fun at some then-common tropes in PMD fanstuff. I was used to using MSPaint for pixel art, so I started doing it in that to show up the folks on Serebii forums who kept complaining they couldn't do anything good because all they had access to was Paint.

I'm sorry, it's shallow isn't it?

VF has long moved past these days, the original comic was canned for several years, then we had another go reducing the dorky parody/riffing stuff, then we finally removed all of that and made it a serious story, which is the incarnation we have now. But, the MSPaint survived, because I got too used to drawing in MSPaint and now I can't seem to get away from it. The tests I've tried in Photoshop and Sai have not looked as good (mainly because I SUCK at lineart unless it's treated like pixel art), so I think we're stuck with Paint unless I want to put everyone through an uncomfortable art adjustment period.

Ahh, I see! I wouldn't say that's shallow. If anything, it teaches a lesson. An artist can create art with nothing but handfuls of the lowest possible quality charcoal and sheets of toilet paper if need be. An artist can take the most frustrating version of MS Paint and create something amazing.
