i was commissioned to do a repaint of one of my old pieces for a poster~my computer crashed 3 times while i was working on this and i lost so much progress each time D;
at least now i know to save every 5 seconds ><

I've actually had the same problem before and that taught me that every time I have a line I'm happy with to save.
Solution:
Assuming you have an actual PC and not a Laptop (and hopefully not a Mac) is sounds like you are in need of more RAM.
[ COMPUTER NONSENSE ] [ TL;DR - MORE RAM = BETTER RENDERING. LESS CRASHING. ]
Ram is what the computer uses to store memory. When doing a lot of rending, your PC uses a lot of RAM.
I've actually built my computer rig to run off my GPU (Graphic card) and my RAM when rendering, and added as much RAM as I can. Windows 7 can utilize more RAM than it's earlier versions, so it helps to upgrade to Windows 7 in the future if you haven't already. You can also do what is called SLI/Crossfire which is to use 2 graphics cards in one computer, though you have to build it with special parts capable of doing this. Most people who work with CAD or high-end rendering programs tend to build killer render-rigs. If you find yourself building a new computer in the future, it's definitely worth investing in.

yeah my friend recently built his own computer so i've had to listen to all that comp lingo xD
i do have a laptop though, and unfortunately i dont know how to stick more RAM in :c
i think saving every so often is all i can do. but my laptop actually hasnt unexpectedly shut down in a while now so i was probably just pushing it too hard or keeping it on too long those days. maybe. x3

ALSO, Livestream uses up a decent chunk of RAM. Sometimes when working with a highres file, having music playing and an internet browser open is too much for my PC to handle and it crashes. This may also be the source of your problem.
