Description Working on some animation for my demo reel.

Pretty rough at this stage so I'm still currently working on it. Any suggestions or critiques are welcome.

Edit: 18/02/09
Edited the throw to emphasise greater weight.

Edit: 14/03/09
Started animating a second box for him to throw. There will eventually be three boxes overall. Still need to refine his pick up, and may need to add struggle to his turn.

Didn't do much editing to the first throw.

OH NOEZ! Dave has been trapped in a realm where he's forced to throw boxes nonstop! WE GOTTA SAVE HIM!

...ehh...

nevermind, he'll live.

I don't know why, but this hypnotized me for about 15 minutes.

Wow, that's awesome!

I can't really give a critique, simply due to the fact that I suck at art in even it's simplest of forms, so, my bad on that.

Looks great thus far, at least in my eyes!

It looks good up until he actually throws the box. I feel like it should look like he's straining a little while throwing the box and that when throwing it, the box goes in a different part since it looks weightless when going through the air. Maybe make it's path go more downward earlier in the throw so it looks like there's weight in it. Other then that, it looks good. :3

Yea, there needs to be a better sense of weight when he throws the box. I'll see what I can do.

Thank you

right at the point the box stops for the character to pick it up you can see a double up of the box. As Amanda mentioned it does seem to get lighter upon pickup so maybe more easing out when he lifts would work.

Otherwise looking great for a rough!

More easing...alright, I'll give it a try.

much better now.

would it be better for him to do a mild underarm throw of the box? if anything - it's the same frame of animation and might be more natural for drawing it in. i can't imagine people throwing a box with arms at right angles

a heavy box will land straight anyway without much inclination despite being pitched underarm.

Thanks Poh

Suppose I went with the easier approach of him throwing "downward". For most part, it seems natural enough.

However, I'll toy with the underarm throw.

Never hurts If anything you could make it a double cycle so you have two kinds of throw...people will think there's variety haha.

I've been suggested doing three different types of boxes now. So it will still loop, but there'll be reactions to three different sizes of boxes.

One big, one really big, and one really weird

Hopefully that should wow the industry.

hahaha I greatly hope to see it

Really big as in the size of the page or just big? Weird sounds intriguing meheheh.

Big as in "bigger". So it's bigger than the first box, but still manageable

Weird will be...interesting

Nice. The box seems to be lighter as he's throwing it than when he picks it up. I'd try and add a little more weight/force on the throw part.

I agree. I'll see what I can do to emphasise the weight in the throw.

Cheers Amanda

Looks really nice, about the only thing that may look good is if you were to add a little bit more surprise to his face when the "new" box is suddenly there(although I know it's a rough anim.)

And his back looks like it'd be in major pain because he should probably be bending more with the knees, but that's a little technical and it's more of a style choice, because it looks fine for now, but with a more realistic character it might be more of a problem.

Sorry for saying too much, but it looks good anyway, and I wish that could be my rough stage, because my finished work doesn't even look this good....

I had considered adding surprise, but I suppose it would mean he'd be surprised for every box. I went with the idea that it's work, picking and throwing constantly.

I do agree he should be bending with the knees. He sort of does in the beginning, but mostly his back is bending. I might try to re-draw with him bending at the legs for a more realistic perspective.

Thank you very much for commenting

Ditto, if he were lifting with his back also, his spine would curve outward and reset to normal position the stay at an inward curve. Also, the shoulders would sort go forward from the pull of the box
