Description I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I think this series of photos I did of local hip hop artist Kae Darko is one of the best series I've ever shot. Kae was looking for some dramatic photos for his CD cover and website (not yet released). As soon as I saw the way he was dressed and the retro mic he had, I immediately thought of a blues bar. I tried to recreate that in the series.

There are a lot of subtle details in the lower part of this image that will probably only show up on very good monitors and in print.

I am amazed at your careful detail caught in the shadow details. You must have checked the exposure on that alone and then compensated higher from there.

The keylighting is what really gives this image its impact and "pop". Love the use of it to even add a little rembrant lighting, always good for the men and perfectly suited for a Blues theme style photo. Imagine him on a stage with someone like the former Ray Charles with the look of this image.

I wish you had cropped a little closer on the right side and left a little more dead space on the left side of this image. I think it might have looked a bit better.

*Goes and turns on some Jazz music now*

BTW, 2 more things.

Got a link to any of his music and where did you manage to get one of those old style microphones?

thanks for your detailed crit! i really like that i don't think his music or site are online yet. not sure what's going on with him right now. and the microphone is his. i believe he uses it in his shows.

*Nods* I always give detailed responses. "Thats awesome" doesn't really tell a person crap or help them shoot better. I alway tell WHY I like it and what I would have done. And since your on watch, expect more.

Shame, if he does put his music out, would love to hear it.

he's hip hop singer????? no kidding!!! I've watched a week ago a documentary film about Louis Armstrong (incredible and charming person btw) and the pic remainds me that times.

I really like it! The lighting is, obviously, amazing. The mood you have created is very interesting. I don't find it depressing despite the darkness to it, he seems happy about something. Really great job!

keep it copasetic. (i like that word) very nice shot. will be great additions to a website. i think my monitor is one of the bad ones. i can barely see the mic leading to the ground and the buttons on his coat. any other bits that i'm missing?

fantastic portrait kev, ti really portrays a sense of atmosphere i can't really put my finger on, maybe like a Brooklyn 40's blues and Jazz bar, the lighting is superb!

You've definitely captured the feeling of a blue bar with both shots. I remember seeing these on your blog (if I remember rightly) and thought how fantastic they were. You'll have to post the link to his website once its up and running

it looks really good, the lighting gives a dark, slightly depressed feel about him.
and i like how you switched your sig at the bottom to a dark shade of grey so that it doesn't take away the attention from him. cool.
