Description
I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I think this series of photos I did of local hip hop artist Kae Darko is one of the best series I've ever shot. Kae was looking for some dramatic photos for his CD cover and website (not yet released). As soon as I saw the way he was dressed and the retro mic he had, I immediately thought of a blues bar. I tried to recreate that in the series. There are a lot of subtle details in the lower part of this image that will probably only show up on very good monitors and in print.
EDIT: He changed his name to Kae Sun, so I'm changing the deviation name. Check his website at: [link]

The lighting is just spot on. It leaves so much to the imagination....and the dramatic feel...as you said. Spot on, i think.
Awesome work on this one.

Such a beautiful photo. The lighting is so strong and dramatic. I think that, along with the pose, makes it quite an emotional image.

Because of the great lighting, the composition's perfect. Awesome!
I'm not sure whether I like those four bright dots on his arm or not, but I'm sure you have them there for a reason.
I always notice small details, but I almost never know whether they make the photo better or not..

I would like to do a painting of that... I did one similar and I think it would be a nice companion. I was wondering if that would be ok?

Outstanding work! Fine arts meets commercial. The image which opens the intro trailer on the website is perhaps as suave and striking as this one.. in fact, quite a way to own both the vertical and the horizontal composition, proving that none is better, it's all about how you use it.
The lighting is just beyond superb. The absence of such immediate Blues Club mock-up effects, in the form of smoke or spot-lights, was so tastefully supplemented with a more interpretative and mysterious lighting. The way he blends into the obscurity goes to strengthen the mood and the idea of a musician becoming the atmosphere in a room when performing.. esspecially in night clubs, where often only a voice will reveal the singers presence.
Technically immaculate and outstandnding stylistically. I was really inspired seeing this series.......... to getmehself a soft box unit
Love the sensuality of his gaze at the mic.. I wonder where his thoughts are. If this doesn't entice people to go and check him out, nothing will... and you easily might have captured some of the best images to be taken of Kae Sun... only time will tell.

he's really quite passionate, isn't he? it really looks like love between him and the mic, eyes partly closed, feeling the moment. i get like that when i play and sing too.. it's one of those moments when you feel like you've dropped in on a personal conversation between a person and their passion. excellent work!

Wow, you really nailed the whole old "blues bar" feel to this. This could have easily been taken 60 years ago. Amazing. I love his face and the light on his hand. It's such an expressive hand, the way it holds the mic. PERFECT lighting on the whole image, really. A beautiful, classic photograph.

Ah, yes, finally someone who knows how to shoot musicians correctly.
This series is incredible.
You did get some fabulous detail at the bottom, grounds him a bit, I like that.
Its interesting that this portrait draws me straight to his lips, when normally you'd be attracted to the eyes, but its entirely appropriate to look at the lips first in this one.
I love that this has a black and white feel without being in black and white, I don't know if that makes sense to you but oh well.
This is an inspriring shot, he must be ecstatic to have such fabulous pictures.

man...
Kev this series is awesome
Classy, sophisticated and intelligent. Just like Kae Darko.
Even tho it's very hard to see in the details, the way the mic stand almost disappears into the shadow detail is cool (next to the pants or is that my monitor playin tricks on me?)
The only thing is that this shot seems 'redder' (or maybe just contains more red) than the others in the series.

superkev In reply to DonnyDonn [2005-10-31 03:37:00 +0000 UTC]
yup. it is redder, or warmer. i processed it slightly differently. there are others in the shoot that i processed this way, just to show some variety. thanks for the kind comments

for sure i agree this was one of your bests
aside from the fact that the lighting is right on
i enjoy lookin at this guy
he looks classy, i love classy, professional and conservative shoots
not that the liberal and more sexual shots are bad
but iv'e always enjoyed that conservative view on things
anyways i like this
just gives me a sense of relaxation
and it makes me think of the recent tragedy in new orelans
ALL of the jazz history was lost there, it was lost
thanks to a damn natural disaster
but it makes me think o fthat
so this is a sad series for me
given i had family there
but this is great really
really touching to me atleast
thank you
