Description This is the finale of my Max Elemental series of male bodyscapes. As with the other two, my goal in this one was to create abstraction from the human form. I think this is by far the most abstract of the three. Again, the model is the incomparable Max. I hope you enjoy it!

I absolutely love this shot! I think it's my favorite shot of any body part I've seen so far. You really did get it to look rather abstract and gorgeous!

it boggles my mind to try to work out how the human body makes something like that... well done there. And the texture is soooo cool. and it's all so warm and fuzzy and delicious and makes me want to go make some hot chocolate...hmmmm...

Ah, great use of the human form. I like the spot-focused quality of it. Sorry for the half-ass comment, I'm in a bit of a rush.

I think I like this one the best from the series. Im wondering if you tried to see what these looked like in B&W? Im guessing they may have had a more classical appeal?

superkev In reply to scab-lab [2004-11-27 01:30:55 +0000 UTC]

i must admit i didn't try these in b&w, mainly because i had imagined them from the beginning as being in color. i will try though.

I thought it was his back but now I'm confused. And the light and colour temperature makes me think of a hot desert. Which is kind of cool. This was definitely an interesting series. And a good way of showcasing your superior lighting techniques.

i'm glad the image is confusing, actually. it's supposed to be abstract

The landscape is simply amazing...
The lighting is superb as usual.
I'd like to see this one in b/w maybe, the contrasts would be a little sharper..

This is my favorite of the three. Superb lighting evenly tones the contours of his back and creates a phenomenal display of abstract body work. Beautifully executed, you're the master

What a great finale. I love the series, to me the abstract form looks to me like they could be desert landscapes. Maybe its just me. Great series none the less!

Is that man old? coz he has so many wrinkles at his back, or maybe it's your shooting techniques?
How long did you make that man standing like that?
Anyway, nice shot..!

I love the texture of the skin. It's quite amazing. I often like exposing the texture of skin as much as I can in photographs. If you haven't tried this - use calculations to convert to black and white, and in calculations, use the blue channel on the blue channel in overlay mode. It brings out things in skin that just were not visible at all before, it's amazing. It works better on some photos depending on exposure and other things...

Also on this peice I love that it seems to have a duality of tension and ease somehow at the same time.

Great work!

wow. neat trick with the calculations thing. i'll have to try that. right now i use a channel mixer layer in monochrome mode and fiddle with combinations of the three channels adding up to 100 until i get what i want.

DyingNexus In reply to superkev [2004-11-27 16:19:34 +0000 UTC]

It seems many people say the channel mixer is the 'better' way to do the BW conversion but I think it's a little weird to say that because the two methods work in very different ways. I think there are many looks that each can acheive that the other can't. My take on it is that it depends on the individual photo and what it needs to look like, that will determine the best method. For instance, I don't think that channel mixer can really do what I'm describing with calculations.

Just my thoughts.

superkev In reply to DyingNexus [2004-11-28 00:34:50 +0000 UTC]

i completely agree. i have been playing with this calculations thing ever since you mentioned it and now i'm finding it's rescuing photos that i had discarded because channel mixer didn't give me the look i want. it's a brand new toy in my toybox. on the other hand, i'll still be using the channel mixer for most conversions. thanks again!

See this one's perfect. No bright exposed areas where they shouldn't be

I love the diagonals that are created apart from the "main" landscape

must have been a physical exhaustive pose! well done boys

i adore the series. i'm not into muscles, too manly for miriam the feminist but i love more less abstract body close ups. is there are portrait of max somewhere? i'd love to complete my image of him. yeah i'm boring i know

escapism [2004-11-24 14:20:21 +0000 UTC]

What I like about this is what I don't see. What I mean by this is that there are two bumps in the shoulderblade area that look as tho something (wings) is trying to come thru the skin. Therefore not seeing the face of the model leads me to believe that he is in an immense amount of pain. The darkish lighting also gives me that mood! But this is me, most likely looking deeper into this than I should but due to the abstract nature of the piece, I think I'm allowed!

It's a great way to end your "Max Elemental" series. Beautiful shot!

I can actually tell which part of the body this one is, but again you've made his skin subtly different. Warmer tone to this one. hehe I like the tiny little folds and wrinkles in the centre of his back
