Sir Handel was shunting together his train when they finally found him and cornered him.

"We want to know what's going on, Sir Handel." Duke said. "You haven't been yourself lately."

"It's okay to admit that you're in love with Proteus, you can trust us to keep your secret!" Said Peter Sam, innocently. Sir Handel and Duke both looked at him with a confused face, but then Sir Handel was even more confused by what he had just said.

"You think I'm what?!!" He spluttered. He sighed, knowing that he could not hide this from his friends for any longer. "Then I guess I'll come clean. I met Proteus when she was fresh out of the Steamworks. Back then she was wearing a blue undercoat like my own paint and it made me think about how I've lead my life so far, almost 120 years. As long as you two and all the others have known me, I've been arrogant, impulsive, cranky...Mr. Percival used the data gathered from measuring me to build Proteus with Sir Topham Hatt's help. He said that she was almost like my daughter because of that, and it made me remember..." Sir Handel was tearing up at the moment. "...How much you taught me; How you rescued me on the Mountain Road all those years ago; How you kept us on the straight and narrow by telling us about Smudger; It made me remember how much you've been like a father to me, and now that I have the chance I can be there for her...just the same way you've been there for me."
