Description This is a project I didn't expect to work on at all, but then I started playing Submachine 8, and got inspired to convey my appreciation for such a fantastic game series in a piece of artwork.  A while ago my dad and I got hooked on a series of point-and-click puzzle games called Submachine.  The first one had challenging enough puzzles and was fun, but the second, the Lighthouse had a creepy and intriguing feel to it.  You don't run into anyone, but you find notes left behind by those who have already traveled through this.  It becomes more intriguing when the notes start to discuss travel between dimensions, questions the Submachine universe itself, and hidden remnants of civilizations that lived beyond the dimensional barriers.  I highly recommend checking it out, because it's a good challenge, and its so thought provoking: www.mateuszskutnik.com/submach…

There are a lot of different elements from different games in the series in this piece, with the red arch from The Lighthouse, the keys from just about any game, the teleportation machine from the Lab onwards, while the more ancient looking pieces come from the later games, like the Root and the Plan.  I really liked the bioluminescent trees when I first saw them in the Root, so I had to include that and based the rest around the central gateway, a portal to an entirely different dimension.

Submachine belongs to Mateusz Skutnik

Such a criminally underrated series. So good.

WOW! That's ABsOLuTELY FaNTaSTiC!
(Of course you know it made my ears go up...look at my avatar. ha!)

I have been a HUGE fan of Submachine (in particular) and all of Skutnik's works, since I discovered his creations back in 2005.  Although I have over the years seen quite a few really incredible Skutnik - influenced creations from his fans… I must tell you that this is one of the best I've ever seen! Every detail is perfect. I especially love the perspective you've created of looking directly forward, as opposed to the side-to-side, up/down navigation that we're programmed to perceive Submachine with...
Just awesome! I will be looking for more of your stuff in the future…

Well thank you!
I figured since I love his games and have been inspired by the artwork and story in them that a tribute was fitting.  I don't think it compares to anything that he does, but I really enjoyed creating it, meshing all these game elements together into one piece that exemplifies the game series.  I know Submachine isn't very widely known, but it is an honor to create pieces that even a small select crowd recognize and enjoy!

I usually look at the walkthrough if I'm stumped enough, though I try to leave that as a last resort, because figuring it all out by yourself is half the fun!
