Here's a tip when writing Japanese/Chinese characters - always start from top to bottom, left to right. IF you're not sure, try looking up some videos on Youtube, they'll be helpful, I'm sure.
I'm teaching myself to write simple characters, so... with practice, you become perfect!

Beautiful, nice open design, but having the steps on the side like this is kind of rare in a shinto shrine like this one. It wouldn`t be a (Buddhist) temple because of the colour scheme and style of the wood. But then again, those lanterns are mainly only used in temples... You`ve created a new religion!
Looks to be on the side of a mountain so I guess the steps thing can be forgiven as I have seen this once or twice. Shrines are usually very symmetrical unless they are places in circumstances such as this...
