Description
Taken out on the Bald Hill opal field, Lightning Ridge N.S.W. 22.12.12 at 9:16pm EDST.What a surprise this bolt was. The storms were shutting down and rapidly weakening by this point due to an upper atmospheric temperature drop. Outflow winds were furious by now too -indicative of the storms collapsing overhead and some very strong microbursts happening as a result.
We actually didn't really see this bolt, only a super bright flash (non-staccato). I had friends turn up to photograph with me and we were chatting at the time while looking out to the left of this area. I was just lucky enough to get this bolt in frame. Thank goodness for the 16mm!
These storms were still around 20-25k's out to the E-SE of town here. That's part of the Orion constellation visible in the upper left corner.

Hey, I have a question. : P Have you ever considered trying to capture images of sprites, blue jets, or elves? I have been looking at a lot of pictures of them recently, and it struck me that you might be able to capture some because of the terrain down there. : )

Hi Lucas,
I guess it's possible with the ISO capabilities of the MkIII? We have often talked of doing it over the years, just never tried I guess. I will keep it in mind for the September storm season start. We had a lousy last season as far as storm numbers went (though the few we had were all severe) so if we do get them a bit more frequently I will try my best to grab something in the form of a jet or sprite from a distant horizon if I can.

Yeah, I would bet the MkIII would be ideal for it. Our storm season has been bad, too. Not a single thunderstorm here. I think I'll go cry now.

Thanks so much for the kind words!
I guess some knowledge is needed to do this type of photography. It offers an added safety factor -knowing where the storm is and what it's doing etc. It also makes planning a shot so much easier when you understand the nature of a particular storm at any one time.
This is so much easier now with internet access to weather radar at any time on my iPhone. It used to be basic guess work by eye and wind directions back in the day.
Love your car designs by the way. Really nice work!

The branching was nice to see here. I was very fortunate it didn't blow this shot out.
