After my recent submission of my free to use pulsing avatars a number of people have asked if they can create their own version, so i've created this to help. Its not very easy to explain so i will do my best.

To create the rings i used circles of increasing diameter of 4 pixels. I coloured them in a range of colours to clearly identify the rings.

The actual rings used in the avatars are made up of two of the smaller rings coloured the same colour. These gradually move one band at a time to create a cycle. With 2 colours the animation loop consists of 4 frames.

When animated together it appears the rings become larger/smaller (depending on the direction animated). if its going the wrong wa reverse the frames.

Feel free to use the ones i have created above in your own animations, however please credit and link back to here in an submissions artists comments
