Description
Tutorial dedicated to ~MedeaHiasobiDone for a cosplay reference thing, and many people probably know this already (another case of having the camera around while shooting the zipper tutorial .
But, it is still useful - I really kind of cringe when I see people with beautiful outfits, but then they just tack the bias tape on the top (it's even worse when they don't even use bias tape, and just use strips of fabric regularly *shivers*)
It really is a very quick thing to do, and takes as much effort (and time) as top stitching it in place does, so why not do it the nicer way? That's my theory, at least.
So, I hope someone out there finds this useful, and not too confusing

I'm so insanely happy to hear it!! I know, bias tape tricked me for a long time, and so many books tell you the ugly way of doing it that I just was pulling my hair out in frustration
And, it helps to have some around to play with, it helps it make a bit more sense
I'm always here to help with sewing problems, if you ever have any questions, I'll do my best to help

Also, just a question (I'm a newbie when it comes to sewing) do bias tapes come in different widths? Cos I'm thinking of making the captain jacket in Bleach and I was just wondering about the collar and stuff since I'm sketching out the design.

I'll never forget how stupid we thought our crafts teacher was back in in the 70's when I was an 11-12 year old kid. We all had to sew tunics (think the boys made aprons) made from calico with red or blue bias binding around the "wingy" open sleeves, neckline and bottom. And the teacher wouldn't allow us to topstitch the bias tape, we had to do it like you did and hand sew the backside which we thought was ridiculous and so boring, using the sewing machine was so much more fun. But now I'm glad for many of the things we were taught, and I catch myself doing it of free will today, as I now see the point. Another thing is basting. We hated that, and were convinced that it was completely pointless. But it sure isn't, some things are just much better basted properly before sewing... Thanks for your great tutorials!

I have such a retarded question for you!
Putting bias tape around angled corners, is this possible? I keep pinning different things but I'm rather lost.
π: 0 β©: 1
taeliac In reply to kyusai [2009-07-19 20:03:54 +0000 UTC]
Oooh... mitered corners are tricky - try looking in a sewing book if you have one on how to do it, I honestly can't explain how to do it... I usually wind up re-pinning it a ton of times to get it right. For outside corners, kind of like this -> |__fabric__|
You kind of start going down one side, all the way to the end, and then take the bias and fold it over, and you can kind of see how it will look in a point, and start around the corner... geeze, see? It's really hard to explain! But, it's called "mitered corners" and you should be able to find something!
Otherwise, it doesn't look as pretty, but if you run one piece of bias off the end, and then create a nice start on the next perpendicular line, it doesn't look too bad
Inside corners, though, just make me ill... I do them all by hand, because you can pin it in how you want it to look, and then slip-stitch it in place by hand
I hope that helps a bit!!

Hehe, thanks hon. I just have to come up with the worst questions don't I? I really appreciate the guidance though, with a few other things I've looked up that helps put it in place! Going to see what I can search up about mitered corners.

how would you sew on single fold bias tape? i didnt know there were 2 types of bias tape x_X;; i need to sew it on to the top and bottom of my hand warmers, help x_x?
π: 0 β©: 1
taeliac In reply to GrimAngelYuki [2009-05-30 17:53:06 +0000 UTC]
Single fold is a bit trickier - you still open it up, and sew one edge on, but then you usually have to hand sew the other side down, if you don't want stitching visible. Otherwise, you can use something like stitch-witchery or other fusible web to fuse it down, and then either sew it or not

oh ok! i get it now~ makes sense xD
so for Aerith would that be the front of the dress where that one line goes down... you know what i mean?
π: 0 β©: 1
taeliac In reply to animeNINJA07 [2009-05-11 16:30:45 +0000 UTC]
Yep! You'd just need to change the closure from being in the back or the side for most dresses, to being down the front.
It shouldn't be too hard to find a basic pattern to work with - I can't find the one I used to use, though, I think it's discontinued, but it looks like simple dresses shouldn't be too hard to get a hold of - you may have to change the neckline a bit, too, but that looks to be the worst of it

*bows down*
xD Top stitching isn't the worst that could be done, trust me.
Oh the joys of being a beginning cosplayer: I used stitch witchery to put on my bias tape.
I'll redo it, I /PROMISE/.

taeliac In reply to shmac [2009-04-17 15:14:18 +0000 UTC]
I've seen that, too, believe me!
This is surprisingly easy to do, so it's definitely worth the extra bit of work - heck, I've seen people hot glue on their bias tape, cuz they said they didn't want the topstitching to show
We all start out there, it just depends if you wanna get better at it, or just have fun with the costumes
I'm glad to be of help!!

shmac In reply to taeliac [2009-04-17 16:55:19 +0000 UTC]
D:> Hot glue? That had to look worse than top stitching would...at least in my mind.
Or possibly have fun with the costumes /while/ getting better at it? ;D
I'm glad that you're of help too, haha! Thanks again.

It did indeed look pretty bad, to say the least XP At least the person realized later on that it was probably a bad idea, and didn't do it again
That is a good one, too - having fun is really what matters the most, though

Great tutorials ! I love bias tape (cause I am the finishing maniac...) but I almost always make my own. I also have the Vogue sewing book (it's one of my Bibles) and they have this kickass technique to make bias tape in a continuous fashion (instead of sewing together multiple bands). I also like to precurve bias tape with my iron before using it on curved parts (like for facing the inside of a collar)

Can you tell I've been doing nothing but reading your tutorials for the past two days?
This one is excellent! I need to make a D. Gray-Man custom designed tote bag, and I had no idea how to do the white stripes. THANK YOU!
On a side note, my Yuna bow is coming along nicely. Hand painting is tedious,. but it's working.

Soooooo...I can somewhat figure it out, but how do you put on single fold? Especially sewing up the other side. *Hits head* I'm slow on the uptake. I'm re-making my arrancar orihime costume so I'll be using it. A while ago, I planned to do it and thought of using strips of fabric.
But folding the insides in and ironing it flat [like making wrong bias tape? XD] But then I discovered bias tape planning it out and got some but they didn't have any black double fold in stock so I went with single. Sorry if that didn't make sense. XD
