Description
Tutorial dedicated to ~MedeaHiasobiDone for a cosplay reference thing, and many people probably know this already (another case of having the camera around while shooting the zipper tutorial .
But, it is still useful - I really kind of cringe when I see people with beautiful outfits, but then they just tack the bias tape on the top (it's even worse when they don't even use bias tape, and just use strips of fabric regularly *shivers*)
It really is a very quick thing to do, and takes as much effort (and time) as top stitching it in place does, so why not do it the nicer way? That's my theory, at least.
So, I hope someone out there finds this useful, and not too confusing

No problem I was the same way; I didn't realize you shouldn't just stitch it on on top, but this looks so much prettier (and can sometimes be faster, oddly enough

See, we come up with mantra's like "No more pants, no more pants" while having to sew pants, so I recommend having some sort of thing to chant - if anything, it distracts you from the time you have to spend fixing things

I honestly had no idea that bias had a shorter side. Heck, I wasn't even sure I'd ever be using bias. Except if I wanted to make a pretty, contrasting edge on some vest I'd be making... some very many years in the future. BUT! This very helpful and informative tutorial makes me want to try this out for myself. Actually, all of your creations and tutorials make me want to try and take a stab at sewing. And yes, a stab. My Quick Un-picker (Seam ripper I think you called it?) always seems to be stabbing me.
So yes, I just wanted you to know I this tutorial, and will probably be using it sometime in the future.

(wow! This is really late, sorry!)
Bias is an awesome thing - if you don't use the double-fold variety (which is what this one is) you can get single fold, and just open up one edge of the thing, and use it as a quick facing for dresses/skirts/vest/anything It's a fine way of finishing things, and rather handy to have around
And... yeah... you stab yourself a lot. I just bought a new seam ripper (yep!) and its like a death machine, and has this crazy hooked blade on it, and I cut myself the other day with it It happens all the time

(I'm sorry, too! I'd actually forgotten I'd commented, until this reply )
I'd say it's pretty handy. None of this troublesome fold hemming thing (Which I've found is virtually impossible to do well on ANYTHING that isn't a straight edge) I recently hand blind hemmed a dress I've made for my little sis. Even with the minimal curve it was still difficult to do. Ugh >.< Maybe it's just me?
Mind you, I hate seeing a sew line at the bottom of a garment. That's just my aesthetics.
Plus, bias is an easily added contrast/interest! >w< I am totally going on a fabric & notion shopping spree this coming payday
Bloody 'ell! Are you okay, it didn't cut too deep, did it?
Hooked blade? All the seam-rippers I've used in my life have been a small, slightly curved affair.

hehe. this is kind of a stupid question..but what is bias tape, and what's is used for?
and why is it called tape if you still have to sew it on o.o

taeliac In reply to roxanne23 [2008-06-04 15:12:05 +0000 UTC]
I have no idea why it's called bias tape, to be quite honest What is is, is fabric that is cut "on the bias", (the pic at the top of the tutorial) ~ it allows the bias cut piece to conform around curves where straight "on the grain" fabric wouldn't... it's more of a trim or way of finishing things than anything~

No problem! I'm glad it helped - usually, for corsets, I wind up hand sewing the back part of the bias on, just because my instructor is a jerk like that, although the last Tudor one I did for a friend I did it this way, and it worked out okay
*goes to check your gallery now*

We all fall back into our bad habits sometimes. It's always hard trying to do something the right way since it usually takes longer. As long as we're trying to be better that's what counts ^^

Great, useful tutorial. I'm one of those picky people that hand sews the back to finish Though occasionally when I'm in a hurry I 'stitch in the ditch'. Mostly I reserve the hand sewing for corset finishing but that's where I use most bias tape!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to Janes-Wardrobe [2008-04-14 23:40:04 +0000 UTC]
I hand sew on bias on corsets, too, just because it seems so much easier - I've spent as much time picking out screwed up areas when trying to stitch in the ditch with them, that it's just faster (and less headache) now
I never thought I would admit to something like that, to be quite honest!

Janes-Wardrobe In reply to taeliac [2008-04-15 09:13:17 +0000 UTC]
Hahaha, have you found your hand sewing speed and neatness increase the more you do it? When I look back t stuff I was doing 10 years ago I just wouldn't be happy with that quality now!

I just had my review yesterday, and that's what the instructors were floored about - apparently, my attention to details has improved tremendously over the last year or so
I look back at some of the things I've done, too, and just shiver

Janes-Wardrobe In reply to taeliac [2008-04-25 19:15:01 +0000 UTC]
That's good news. I must admit I look back at some things I was immensely proud of and shudder with embarassment.
The best bit is you didn't even realise you were improving which means everything you do will be so much better now.
