Description
Back view of the chest.Otherwise I'm 100% happy with this (=rare), but that middle piece of metal is a bit too much... But I didn't really plan too much, I just made nice looking pieces with some vague vision, and then nailed them in.
Oh and that's my other gripe, it's fukkin hard to make nice looking nails

Are they clinch nails? Yes there are some tricks to making nice nails. One of course is to have a domed header with a round hole in it. Another is to drill a larger hole from the back side of the header so that the nail comes back out easier. I have found that like rivets I cut my nails with less than 1 1/2 diameter stock for the head. You also do 2 sided tapers and a two sided cut to make the nail. Then when heading over you want 4 to 5 distinct facets from you last 4 to 5 hammer blows to clean it up. (of course you can make them more decorative if you want to spend the time ether at the forge or at the bench) I have found I like a slightly domed face to my hammer for making nails.
I like the amount of curled tendrils you have on the chest. I think it turned out well and isn't to much.
So that little curlicue is that a spring to hold the top open? And are the boards held together with glue and pegs? I also like the facets at the bottom of the bars very nice looking.

Yes I know all those tricks now, this was back then, and one of my first blacksmithing projects
Yes there's pegs and glue, altough if the pattern was followed tightly enough, the construction should bear most of the load instead of the pegs. But I was working in pine, and am not such an accurate woodworker Yes the octopus-like form is the claps, the springy thing is for keeping it closed, the simplest thing I could think of...

Beautiful! I may try to make one like this if you don't mind
I can't tell, are the sides tapered in like they are on some Viking chests?

Yeah it's based on the Mästermyr chest, they are tapered.
