Description
You hafta hit 'download' to view it all . . . sorryA more detailed look at how I do markering on my pictures.
A few years ago I was given a chance to use one of my friend's copic markers, but I didn't like them as much as prismacolor markers then. Gradually I started to move from prisma to tria, then the store I bought the trias from stopped selling them. Well, they just now started selling copics individually. Honestly, though, I think it was better to start on prismacolor markers, just because they're a little bit easier to handle.
Anyway, this tutorial is for you guys, so if you do a marker work based on this tut, note me and I'll link it in this description.

my friend at nattosoup.blogspot.com is working on making a post about "the essential 25 markers," or really, the smallest set of markers one can get and still be useful. I've really only got so many from years and years of collecting them. Like, we're talking since I was in high school. so longer than I've been on DA. Yeah. Going on 10 years. I mean, I'm a very young woman. :I

Ooh! I definitely want to read that! Let me know when they're finished?
Hahaha! I may be young but gawd I have no time. And dear, your only old if you think you are! I have an 66 year old gramma who lives by that and is still all over the place!

while we never finished the marker list, I did finally get my act together with my kickstarter, which has a ton of tutorials and how-to stuff in it. I'd be super appreciative if you took the time to check it out!

I use a blend of prismacolor, tria pantone, and copic sketch markers. The best place to find these is online, I'd just google search.

Awesome tutorial, I just started into the markers last year. Mainly Prismacolors because they're available nearby and Copics are way too pricey for me. That and I use the color pencils and watercolors as well.
As for skin tones, I layer Eggshell, brick beige, and light walnut together because deco peach, light peach and peach just seem too fluorescent and don't blend as well. Any suggestions to add to the value of the skin? Now that I compared my work to your's, mine is very flat by comparison.
Thanks. ^^

adding in some very light purples (violet mist?), blues (cloud blue) and even greys into the shading will help a lot. Don't be afraid to go 'too dark,' it takes a lot to really over marker a piece. Also, don't be afraid to keep going back and blending.
I checked out your gallery, it looks like your in fine shape in your road of artistry. Just keep pushing to improve and surpass yourself!

I have a very limited variance of purple (Lilac, Imperial Violet, and Violet. They're the only colors Micheal's sells, so I have to get the other shades online. Which I can't afford to do at the moment. )
Thanks, I'll try out the cloud blue and grays when I get a practice piece drawn.
Thank you so much. ^^

if its light enoguh, a touch of deco pink usually works as well. The more cool colors you can cast into a shadow make it more interesting.

It's been finished a few weeks ago but because I had to buy a whole new scanner (stupid Vista) I couldn't get it uploaded until today. This is probably my best picture so far, even though looking at it there is probably still more work to be done with it. Thank you so much for the advice and all. ^^

Hi, I live in the uk and I find tria markers where ever I go, but I have to order Copic's from the net. I was wondering if you thought if it was best if I got tria markers instead?? I have heard that they dry out fast because of the three nibs?! I've only had to refill my E00 so far, but the site does not have many refill colours...so I'm undecided about what to do

taintedsilence In reply to T-i-n-k [2009-03-12 18:36:18 +0000 UTC]
I only ever use the broad nib on my trias, so that reduces the rate at which they dry out. Trias, however, also have refill inks (you can get them somewhere . . . ).
Honestly, whichever marker you like better is the one you should use. I didn't like the copics when I first tried them, so I stayed with prismacolor; I only like the copic sketch with the brush tip, honestly. Generally, though, I use a mix of prisma, tria, AND copic, just cause they're what I have.

so does the brush tip on the new tria's match the copic sketch brush? because that's what I really like about the copic's aswell.

When bleeding and blending, don't the tips of the lighter colors get ruined by the darker colors when going over them to blend everything together?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taintedsilence In reply to Minacoleta [2008-07-01 05:25:39 +0000 UTC]
not if you let the darker ones dry just a little
honestly I've never had problems. Maybe if you use like a dark blue and a yellow marker, but . . . I wouldn't recommend that in any situation, regardless.

Minacoleta In reply to taintedsilence [2008-07-01 17:28:40 +0000 UTC]
That makes sense. I mean, in the past, my copics tips have gotten slightly stained from darker colors, usually the inking pen or the sharpies I use to color.
But well, it's probably different with Prisma's.
By the way, you're coloring style is absolutely fantastic.

Interesting to see another's process. I work completely backwards from the way you do, I lay darks first and build them up, then put the light color over everything as a topcoat.
What's the diff between trias and prismacolors. I have prismacolors, i tried copics and didn't like them as much
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taintedsilence In reply to Clessy [2008-01-23 12:20:00 +0000 UTC]
the difference is in the colors of ink and the tip feel. Prismas have a softer tip than trias, but trias have a better variety of color. Copics top them both, but I really only like using the brush tip of the copic sketch markers.

Oh good, found a nice tutorial... Don't have any new pertys yet, but I was looking into getting some copics markers. Now do you really suggest I start off with something simpler first, before moving on to copics?

when I first tried copics I couldn't use them well. Its good to get good marker skills first, I think, cause they can be a little harder to work with.

Haha! I concur wholeheartedly with your tips! I already do a lot of those things already, though, more out of instinct than artistic knowledge, especially adding lighter colours to darker ones (I especially like to add very pale shades of one colour to a very dark shade of its complement--very cool result)
but GASP!! I thought I did a lot of blending and colour layers! but I see I have been overshadowed! I guess the main reason is because I can't afford to use up so much expensive marker on a single drawing
Bravo!

I probably can't afford to either, especially because I'm a full-time student, mostly unemployed, and making only minimum wage when I am. I'd say that I do it because I sell the art, but recently that hasn't been going so well either.
I just can't bear to do less - my artistic pride just wouldn't let me . . .

Copics are basically art markers, and very expensive, so they're basically only found in art stores. No regular Office Depot would carry them, because they would be too afraid no one would buy them.
