I adore this thing. Good thing it is owned by a friend.This one of those rare projects that I simply drew on the wood, and then cut. My favorite part is the stairway that cuts into the lid. My signature is on the inside of the lid.
Source art: Me.
Box: I cut off the bottom of one of the poplar mugs I had made, and cut the lid myself.
Finish: Clear polyurethane. The box is lined with purple brocade.

Currently, I use #1 X-acto knives with #10 and #11 blades, Micro-mark miniature carving chisels, an old beginning carver palm cutter set (5 chisels), an old beginner straight chisel set (6 chisels), and a few choice chisels I have picked up at woodworking stores and show. At the time, I had not discovered how useful a scalpel is (#10), especially in that it can be re-sharpened, which a #11 cannot. I can't tell you when I picked up which chisels, other than to say that I got most of the Micro-mark ones 15-20 years ago.
If you plan on carving, I do recommend that you find a beginner set, of good, not excellent, quality, and learn to sharpen them yourself.
I really need to write a book.

This is just spectacular! So clever, so much beautiful lovely detail, and again, so tactile looking! I want to run my fingers all over those lumps and bumps, specially in the lid.
