Shrek the musical should’ve been a self-aware parody of musicals similar to “the guy who doesn’t like musicals” with as many new jokes about it being a musical as possible. And the music should entirely be inspired by the movie’s soundtrack. And shrek himself refusing to take part in the musical and verbally getting frustrated with the songs and interrupting while people sing, and “who I’d be” would be the first time he opens up and sings.

Or the plot could be something like a meta in-universe musical that the characters are being cast in to retell the story of the first movie (but not all the cast is excited like for example, they would have a dwarf character who is upset that he has to play farquad because he is always typecasted as the little guy and could have had a song himself he would sing out of character about this) and shrek doesn’t want to be part of it. And the guy making the musical or in charge of it is actually the villain luring shrek to kill him on stage for revenge, like maybe it turns out to be Prince Charming in disguise and this hypothetical alternate musical is a replacement for shrek the third.

I’m going with the latter because I love the idea of a musical taking place in the story that it takes place in and it reminds me of the avatar play in ATLA.
Anything shrek should be self-aware and a parody of its medium, and this would have fit perfectly.
