Emma's grown on me ever since Whedon's run that I may like Scott/Emma more than Scott/Jean

well till maybe AvX. still i do think emma was better than jean as a girl friend. Since there is usually no one fighting for her...

Oddly enough, AvX made me like Scott/Emma all the more, though it may be that I interpreted UXM#18 differently from the rest. To me, it felt that Emma was trying to warn Scott that she cannot control herself anymore while ("Human blood."; "Our smallest ideas are ticking bombs..."; "We need to unleash our powers fully...") under the Phoenix's influence.

yeah and the part when scott betrayed emma -.- but aside from that they make a good pair. though i though dark pheonix scott was awesome

A quick rundown of the facts that lead up to that point:
1) Avengers want to destroy the Phoenix
2) Avengers were trying to kill them. Remember, this group has already killed the Sentry and sentenced Janet van Dyne to oblivion, and those two are just the heroes. During this event, we had Wolverine trying to kill them, Red Hulk trying to assassinate them, and Hawkeye with his killshot, all on top of Xavier trying to psychically lobotomise them.
3) As per Emma's confession, their thoughts become ticking bombs
4) Emma thinks destroying the world is a great idea just to get rid of the pests. Scott admits that even he is finding trouble remembering why that was a bad idea ergo he was rapidly losing his humanity to the Phoenix's influence.
Thus, Scott needed Emma to relinquish her hold on the Phoenix immediately, and the only way he knows how is to knock her unconscious. He has three ways of doing that:
1) Choke her until she loses consciousness. This is relatively safe, permanent brain damage only occurs when your brain is depleted of oxygen for at least 5 minutes. Take it from me who was crazy enough to compete in a choking contest: it's quite difficult to pass the 30 second mark when you're being strangled.
2) Optic blast her until she loses consciousness. Dangerous (and shouldn't work, anyway, but AvX retconned Phoenix canon); remember Cyke's entire schtick is his fear of losing control of his powers and he'll end up killing someone just by looking at them.
3) Wait for the Avengers to knock her out. Risky, as they may end up killing her trying to do so.
Anyway, that's how I interpreted the events (probably helped that I read UXM#18 before AvX#11 so I had an idea what Cyke was possibly thinking when he made that decision). I could be wrong though so we'll see what happens with Consequences
