Splish
Ent’s footfalls echoed softly in the cavern around him. He had felt inspired today and had ventured from his protected little pond, into the streams that fed into it. He hadn’t gotten far when he’d found himself entering an underground water system, its messy branching streams and shallow pools were cool to the touch and crystal clear. It was quite calming and serene in here, and he found himself relaxing a bit more than usual. Usually he was quite irritable, especially when he wasn’t near his little pond, but something felt different today, and he felt good.
He wound his way into the earth, listening to the rhythmic echoes of his steady steps, and the gentle shushing sound that his leafy front legs made as the slid through the shallow water. The cave was quite dark, but it seemed as if there were some sort of soft light source somewhere ahead. Perhaps an exit? Mild curiosity drove him deeper, towards the light.
As he rounded a corner, the light grew brighter, and he found himself in a massive chasm. The earth above was opened up in a nearly perfect circle, its crumbling edges an open mouth that revealed the sky above. As his eyes adjusted to the light better, he saw the edges of trees and bushes above, and saw that tendrils of vines hung from the edge above. Thin waterfalls trickled down, there must be water above as well. It felt very comfortable here for him, surrounded by water, above and below.
He trudged into the room, curious about its origins. The center of the room sloped upwards, seeming like rubble perhaps? He looked up, and then back at the floor, and he realized that the pile of stone and dirt, moss and ferns, had once been the ceiling of this great cavern. It must of caved in long ago though, he thought, sniffing around the edges of the heap. It was overgrown, and a thick layer of moss and algae had climbed its way over the heap, softening the corners and giving everything a greenish hue. It was quite beautiful, he thought. He had never encountered a cenote before, and he found himself grateful for the experience. He felt as if he was in the earth’s womb, a pond of new life perhaps.
He nearly chuckled to himself, why was he being so poetic? The idea seemed silly to him, and he turned, aiming to venture further, into one of the adjacent tunnels perhaps? But something strange caught his eye.
Near the top of the mossy pile, half hidden by the glare of the sun, he saw something...purple? Looking closer, anger welled up inside him. This emotion was much more familiar to him, and he fell into it with ease. “Human trash.” he thought, the words rumbling in his heart with rage. A large purple colored candle, wedged amidst the moss and rocks. “How dare they leave trash here!” His water, so pure and clean, this beautiful womb of the earth. He was honored to even have found such a place, and yet, its beauty had been marred by garbage? He was outraged. Stomping roughly, his foliaged feet tumbling against the ground like an angry woman’s broom against the floor. He wasn’t thinking clearly, and so when his thoughts turned to how to get rid of the filth, his emotions took over, and something quite unexpected happened.
Before he even knew what was going on, he felt a massive energy sweep out of him, like a punch in the stomach, he felt instantly deflated and weak. He watched in horror as the energy swirled upwards, rushing and twisting, pulling at the candle, stretching it, molding it.
In an instant, an esk stood before him, towering above him, bright and dark and brilliant and terrifying. Multiple eyes stared unblinkingly down at him, and the rush of energy surged upwards. Water from the cenote pool around him heaved, frothing and swirling with excitement, rushing upwards to greet the waxy spirit. Ent scrambled backwards, emotions tumbling within his confused heart, straining against his weakened strength, he pushed away, his windy element whipping and billowing through the room.
“No...No...NO NO NO!” he cried, confusion and anger fighting for his attention. How could this have happened? What Have I done?? He didn’t want to create an esk! He didn’t want this! Images of his own transformation flashed through his mind. Fear and terror and pain, he winced, gasping for air. His wind rushed and surged around him, wrapping him tighter and tighter in a whirlwind of intense feeling. “I can’t. I don’t. NO! I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!”
Overwhelmed and terrified, he cried out before suddenly vanishing, having teleported himself home to his pond without even thinking.
The howling wind died down, leaves and bits of ferns flipped about, floating gently towards the cavern floor, and the water seemed to still as well. Calming and flowing back down into the pools as the new esk relaxed into her surroundings.
What was that strange beast… was it in pain? Did I frighten it? Come to think of it...what am I?
She looked down, twisting and turning. She seemed to be quite tall, a body of fur, with smooth waxy legs that stretched downward. She had a cape of brightly colored leaves, scattered between with sharp quills. She flexed them, watching with satisfaction as they arched themselves upward and then lied flat once again. The water around her seemed to vibrate, and as she directed her gaze towards it, small waves formed and climbed towards her over the rocks. She inhaled deeply, testing her power...testing...everything.
How curious.
The water followed her thoughts, dancing and rippling, climbing her legs gently, the cool liquid sliding like ice up the smooth wax. She stepped towards the pool, and waded in. It wasn’t deep, but as the surface calmed, she saw her reflection. A dark face with four bright eyes, they flashed like fire in the cavern’s shadows. Fur and horns fanned out around her face, and droplets of water gathered to hang around the horns. They flickered, floating about in bits, shattered pieces of wax. She looked around once more, wondering about the strange small beast…
“What was that?...”
“What am I?”
The rest of the commissioned origins for Orielyn ! This was fun, especially because I got to explore Ent's reactions and such too. Thank you so much for this opportunity sis, I'm really glad we got her figured out!!
