Wind blowing, a sense of urgency, fear and confusion. A dark and fitful dream grasped the fawn before… nothing.

Overhead, the clouds drifted past silently, stars blinking in and out of view as they trailed across the midnight sky. Moonlight bathed the land in platinum, everything was silver and grey. Chirping crickets took up chorus against the night, and somewhere in the distance, a loon cooed mournfully.

It was the perfect night for wandering.

Without a sound, a dark snakelike shadow floated out of the trees, weaving and twisting, a mass of branches and fur. Beads of light, shimmering upward like a flame, followed her in a cloud and illuminated her. She was a magnificent creature, cream colored fur that faded to an inky black. Several large branches arched from her back, and petals floated towards the ground, a halo of soft color.

Floating carefully, her fur coiling and rippling around her, she drifted through the sprawling circus. It seemed messy and unnatural, the moonlight casting everything in muted colors before her. As she floated past the rides and trailers, something caught her attention.

No one is here. No wait… No one is here now.

She could feel a strange energy nearby, coming from underneath one particularly grotesque looking trailer. Something was under there…

Curiosity and duty welled up in the creature, her fur bristled and shifted a shade darker before being completely swallowed up by black. The beads of soft light changed colors too, from a gentle white to a brooding red. She snaked through the air towards the trailer, lowering herself towards the ground to peer under.

It was pitch black beneath the funhouse, a seemingly endless void of darkness and silence. The esk could see though, and there, curled up in a corner lie the body of a fawn. She stared for a moment. Its body seemed restful, sleeping, but she could feel its aura slipping away forever.

Without a sound, she sent the little tongues of crimson light towards the fawn. Like tiny flames, they flickered and winked in the darkness, casting a reddish glow. Reaching out with her mind, she attempted to sense the fawn’s feelings. Its body was already dead, quiet and gone, but its spirit was still dreaming. She sensed fear, longing, loneliness… being far from home.

The esk blinked at the dark void beneath the trailer, the lonely aura echoing in her mind.
