Description This is my representation of the character Rusty From Andrew Lloyd Webber's Rock Musical Starlight Express.
But as an actual Steam Engine. Loosely inspired by the characters from The Little Engine That Could.

I don't know why but I've often interpreted rusty as a tank engine all the same though of brilliant design

That's what I loosely based him off of.

A headcanon of mine is that Rusty finds The Railway Series as an inspiration that makes him proud to be a steamer.

Also, what program did you use to make this?

I ask because I plan to make my own takes on the characters.

mrbill6ishere [2018-11-23 00:48:52 +0000 UTC]

This is pretty good. But I would probably make Rusty a 2-6-0 tender engine instead of a 2-6-4T.

Fun fact: that configuration never made it to the US. Rusty could be an immigrant in this case.

Wow, cool! Once again, Wikipedia needs an update. Thanks for finding that!

TB7Studios In reply to mrbill6ishere [2018-11-23 01:12:47 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty interesting. But I wanted Rusty to be a steam engine switcher. Not to mention be smaller compared to Greaseball and the other Diesel engines.

mrbill6ishere In reply to TB7Studios [2018-11-23 02:28:58 +0000 UTC]

True. But what I was thinking was that as a tender engine, it would just be a very tiny three wheel one at most.

Love the design on this! So if you had the chance to help make an animated feature of the Starlight Express, would you?
(Also curse you for making me aware of this. Because of you I now have Light at the End of the Tunnel Stuck in my head, and now I know practically ALL THE WORDS!! ALL THE WORDS I TELL YOU!!)

TB7Studios In reply to RRARR-Productions [2018-05-11 01:20:26 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to either make or see an animated film made based on this musical.
But I'm gonna have to work really hard or hire an animation team to make that dream a reality.

If Andrew Lloyd Webber was an animator, I'm pretty sure this is what Starlight Express might look like. Seriously though, these designs are really frickin' good.

You know what would be really cool; if you also do his Starlight Express form from the Broadway version, with the silver sequins.

TB7Studios In reply to Nightmare-Mary47 [2018-04-17 01:33:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, I have thought of an idea of the Broadway versions meeting their train forms.

I still have Electra's Private cars to go through along with any extras. Minus the replacements for Ashley and The Rockies of course.

Great coloring job and great detail! (I like that you added both his steam dome and his sand dome ) The hood thing on Rusty's lamps/eyes gives such a shy expression

You're welcome.

You know if they ever made a Starlight Express movie, I think you would be a good choice for the character designer.

One thing that puzzles me, is Starlight Express for kids or adults? It's REALLY confusing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TB7Studios In reply to Kodimarto [2017-07-11 16:25:46 +0000 UTC]

If you ask me, it's both.

If this Starlight Express movie project goes through, it'd most likely get a PG rating.

But not for the views. I want to focus on making it good.

Kodimarto In reply to TB7Studios [2017-07-12 06:05:36 +0000 UTC]

Probably. If they did make a movie I think Disney would be a good choice but make C.B a synthetic character.

I think they're already good.

Cool.

I'm doing my own designs for an adaption of a series of old train books called Sammy the Shunter. They're basically the same as how they appeared in the books only they have facial hair and slightly cartoonish designs.

To me He reminds me of Casey Jr.

TB7Studios In reply to Tonypilot [2017-02-08 08:46:09 +0000 UTC]

Ironically enough when I first drew this character, he did bore a striking resemblance to Casey Jr. But in the end I settled for a design inspired by the little engine that could big strong engine and Virginia Lee Burton's Choo Choo.

Interesting. I've read that book before a long time ago. My main goal was to get the trains to closely resemble the actors and actresses' costumes.
