Hmmm.... I've always wondered why Mewtwo look so different from Mew. I have my theories:
-gene gaps in the Mew DNA code needed to be plugged with new DNA and one set eventually resulted in a Mew that was very different from the actual Mew, thus Mewtwo became a new species of Mew.
-intentional genetic manipulation to make Mewtwo even stronger than any Pokémon on earth resulted in his not 100% Mew appearance
-a random mew-tation (XD) that occurred that didn't create a Ditto and was thus a success
-a side effect from genetic material/growth hormones made to force Mewtwo to rapidly age and advance to his highest level of power

It was filling DNA gaps with human DNA if I recall correctly, and enhancing so he’d supposedly be more powerful

Huh.... explains why Mewtwo always struck me as a Pokémon that is really on par with humans, just in terms of complex emotion and how his mind works and processes things like grief

I just hate that it ended with the kids getting turned to stone, like "really that's it???" but it was nice seeing mewtwo trust a human enough that he was actually genuinely concerned about Red

It would have been pretty cute if Mewtwo opened his eyes and imprinted on Mew, the way baby ducks imprint on the first moving thing they see when they hatch from their eggs. 🐣
