Description
See? A face! Now, as the title suggests, she's still kind of beta.
After making this picture I've already managed to improve her a little, but I know i'm still not there.
So, stuff to correct:
1. The face shape is strange - too round, even though I've been fixing that three times (possibly because of the hairdo; important - don't mind the hair - it was a practice of making hair - the first in whoever knows how long).
2. Something's off with the eyes. HELP!
3. The feet. They're the most worked part of her (seriously), and still something was wrong there - the toes were too chubby, slightly too big. But that's fixed in the actual model now.
Also, don't mind the dress - it was a quick test of a different way to make sewing patterns.
Also 2, the background. It's the background I always use to test the testposes in HDR environment.
Okay, as it's a beta, I'd be REALLY grateful if you gave me some feedback; maybe you see what else is wrong?
Now, because I'm a terrible friend, and honestly have nothing else, i'd like to dedicate this beta-test-picture to ^Mollinda - she's gonna have a getting old day very soon!
Happy birthday, Molly! Please forgive me!
HEY, PEOPLE! DOWNLOAD IT!

So I just took the image into photoshop and fiddled around a bit, turns out the face looks a bit better if the nose is smaller and the eyes are closer together (just slightly mind you) and the mouth is also a bit smaller. The reason why her face seems too chubby is because her features are a little too wide (very easy to fix if you're working in maya).
The toes are perfect. I'm jealous. Tell me how you modeled them?
Only other thing you didn't mention is the bumb on her dress, The lines are too big, and the squares are a liiiitle too perfect (difficult thing too fix... maybe do what toy story did with jessy's hair and add a little bit of fuzz (pixalation) to the texture? I dunno...)
But the legs.... the legs are awesome
p.s You ever composite in photoshop? You can do things nice and quick in there that would otherwise take hours of re-modelling

Wow, thanks for going through the trouble!
I'll definitely try out your tips, thank you!
I'm working in ZBrush, and that's how I made the toes, and everything else (except for the dress and hair).
Well, I didn't talk a lot about the dress, because, like I said, it was only a test of another way to make sewing patterns (I always make simulated clothes using Garment Maker and the Cloth modifier in 3ds max). Its shader was done in about 5 minutes with semi-procedural textures.
YES! I always composite in PS. But my editing is limited to erasing rendering artifacts (and not really often at that). I just don't like "destructive" postwork.

Awww damn, your use of textures is amazinnnngh.
Considering my poor knowledge of human anatomy, there's not much I can say, unfortunately. I've no eye for human bodies. Yet. :'D
Buuut I agree the face is too round, maybe just making the face slightly more V -shaped?
Oh, and those eye lashes - they're just gorgeous. And that dress, all it's small folds and skdfhsd. -nibbles-
You, boy, are very talented at this.

Why thank you, lass!
Yeah, you have poor knowledge of human anatomy. Sure. And I'm my own grandma.
You know, I'm now 90% confident that the face is too round because of the bad hairdo. YES. I've actually checked it by removing the hair and the head shape was much less round.
BUT STILL SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH THE EYESSSSS!!! Asdgdgafdsdf.
Bah, the dress is simulated cloth, congratulate my computer.
THANKS BRO!

wow you're good! !
as you said.. the face is kinda..too round maybe. The toes and the feet are maybe small for her body? they jus tlook a little small for her.. but yeah, it's really good! so keep working on it a little more

tchaikovsky2 In reply to AludA [2011-08-16 09:52:12 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I've hidden the hair to see what the face would look like without it, and haha, it was less round, so blame the roundness on the bad hairdo!
Hmm, I kept thinking the feet were actually too big. Might be perspective issues. Anyway, the feet are a little different now, which makes this picture a bit outdated.
Thank you very much!

Haha, no, she won't.
I mean, she's a "basic little girl", which I modify for use in other pictures. Kinda like recycling.

I've been reading through your comments and I agree, she needs a name...I know she's just a basic model, but she's so cute and she looks like an Anna to me...I tend to name everything though. lol!

Ok at first I thought it was a picture, she looks very realistic to me, that shows you how much I know, lol. I don't see anything wrong with all the things you have mentioned. I love the way you made her dress, the material looks very good, and I can totally imagine what it feels like. The only thing I have noticed that might need a touch up is, right on top of her head where her hair parts, there seems to be a spot where she is missing some hair. But that's about it from me. I can't believe this is just a practice for you, you are amazing = )

tchaikovsky2 In reply to MartaEmi [2011-08-16 10:19:05 +0000 UTC]
No, that doesn't show me how much you know. Any professional might say the same, because I'm using a physically-correct renderer, which is supposed to mimic real life light behavior. You really should be more self-confident, you know.
Yeah, the hair split does suck. After making this hairdo, I've developed a method to remedy this problem, so no worries.
You know, actually this wasn't hard to make. Like, at all. And I'm serious; not in the way like: "it's easy for me", but most of it is done by the computer. I just sculpt the little girl (that was a lot of work - including the shader - but she's being reused for every picture; I don't have to sculpt another one everytime; I just pose them, which is easy and fun), I've drawn the sewing patterns for the dress, positioned them, and the computer sewed them up and simulated like cloth (the visual appearance of the material was done using a simple trick, took me 5-10 minutes to tweak stuff, and the textures are half-procedural), the hair - I just draw some splines (as guides) through which the program interpolates hairs (though the hair shader was hard to set up, but still, quite uncomplicated).
The background and lighting setup is something you do in less than a minute.
After you're done, you press a button, the computer does its magic, and POOF! - this kind of picture pops out.
There. Sorry about the wall-o-text.

You make it sound so easy, "you press a button, the computer does its magic, and POOf!" LOL! I still think you should name her, it's like a period at the end of a sentence, or a title to a song. It will be the cherry on the cake, the final touch. It will give her character, and it will give her life.

tchaikovsky2 In reply to MartaEmi [2011-08-19 13:26:34 +0000 UTC]
Cause it really is that easy!
Maybe you'd like to try yourself at 3d?
Hmm, naming her. I know it woud give her character and all that important stuff, but like I said, she's a base which I use to make other little girls for my pieces.
So let's say I name her Brunhilde (no, never), and I'm making a picture where I modify the face to match my vision. So she stops being Brunhilde (ugh).
See? What's the use of naming a base model?
Convince me.
P.S. That plz makes me laugh.

"Convince me" you say. I was going to let it go, but now you have opened the door for me, so here we go. Although she is your base model, in this picture she will always be the way you have created her. Here she will never change, and look at her, those pretty eyes, it makes me want to know her by her name. Not only that, but I think you said it yourself, "funny to know it's a beta", because somewhere deep inside you know she is more then just a beta. You did a real good job with her, and many have commented how much they like her. Maybe we should take a poll = )
