recently found out that my grandfather did some family research and came up with a crest

That's supremely awesome. It's quite a bit nicer than a good number of crests I've seen (namely, not overly ornate).
A few years ago, someone in my family dug up a family crest that was tied to our last name... as a family we pretty much decided that our last name had to d more with the origin of our family (as it's a location in Europe) and the crest had to do with the ruling lords of the area.
