Description
Full view is best on this one. You can really see his nose, whiskers, and eyes so clearly. I love how he was looking directly at me. I love studying animals in their natural environment, especially since that is a rare occasion.A special thing about this wharf is that the sea lions come to them at high tide which helps them to jump enough to reach the horizontal planks below, where they then like rest for long periods at a time. If they arrive too late the tide is too low and they will jump and jump to no avail, only frustrating themselves... until they realize they'll have to try again the next high tide.
People come to see the sea lions under the wharf, where a couple of squared off holes have been cut away in the flooring and barred around the edges for the people's safety.
Very early in the mornings and late at night, when it's sometimes very quiet in the city, you can hear them barking quite loudly from many parts of the city, due partly because of the echoing their voices make from underneath the wharf.
It is a pretty naturally educational way to view sea lions, as long as this offer is not abused. But knowing Santa Cruz, they would do everything possible to monitor and insure the safety of these wonderful sea creatures.
*********
Near the end of Summer, August 2008, we took a very brief trip to Santa Cruz, California.
Santa Cruz has always been my true home, as in the place where I've always felt and been the most "at home"-- I've always wanted to actually make it my real home since the first time I was taken there at the age of 3.
Though, it is the single most place I ever go to, from wherever I have actually lived, this particular time turned into:
Artistic Santa Cruz- a necessary therapeutic photo art project.

I like the way the light is hitting that particular seal. He or she is looking up as if to say: " Sleepy time!" Or maybe they're just hoping someone might throw them down some grub. It's a very cool shot in my opinion!

They are beautiful. The setting sun was shining right under the wharf and onto the chest of the one stretching up to look at me. So the lighting is really contrasting.
They are cute, but as long as people done get close, which is usually difficult to do, I think it's okay.

Oh, don't be unsure...it's a darling photo, absolutely wonderful. The way his head is tilted is absolutely 'aww!' worthy! Wonderful, beautiful, and graceful. Never doubt that.
