Description
This is my new Belegarth -legal flail, built on half-inch schedule 40 PVC with polyolefin foam, 3M Super 77 Spray Glue, Duck brand Indoor/Outdoor double-sided carpet tape, hockey tape, and black canvas.Pictured also are my new fighting gloves.
The head weighs a little something, as compared to a lot of Belegarth flails, whose heads weigh nearly nothing (1-2 oz). You can't even feel hits dealt by a lot of flails, but this one... well, yeah. You can feel it.
Overall length of 37", 5 inches of "chain", 1.25 exposed rope... fully passing, hasn't yet been to a practice. All the use it's seen so far has been here in London, against friends and myself.
Rawk. Crits, questions, and praise equally welcome.

I really like this. I've never seen a boffer flail before. I was considering making my own with plastic chain, but your idea is safer.

There's an even SAFER design, commonly called a "bag-head flail" in the game I play and it's sister sport (Belegarth and Dagorhir), since the head of the flail is encased in the "bag" that makes up the chain, the head cover, and the attachment to the shaft. The design is here: [link]
What game do you play? Or is it just "friends in the backyard" type stuff?

the latter, since the closest LARP is about 30 miles away and i have no transportation, and the guys I used to hang with just wanted to boffer, which was fine with me.
closest LARP to me would be FinalHaven.
I'm more of whats called a 'foamsmith' anyway. I even make chainmail outta PVC. check my gallery if you wanna see it. (links dont like me right now, lol)

Pretty cool "armor"! Now, get a 5/16" mandrel and a couple dozen pounds of 14 ga. galvy and start making some REAL chain!
If you guys want a semi-homogeneous rules set, you can bum Belegarth's: [link] . The "How To Make" section of the Belegarth Wiki has lots of good information, too.
Maybe one of these days you can make it to an event!

Thanks! I'd love to make the real stuff, BUT I can sell the PVC stuff to LARPers waay cheaper than real chainmail would cost, and it holds up really well to hits from boffer weapons. Plus its cheap to make.
thanks for the links, they should come in handy.
I'll try ta get to an event eventually.

hmm...I've been pondering making a foam lightsaber so that my buddy and I can train without beating ourselves senseless with the large wooden rods I have.
The components list here is useful I'd say.

[link] is just about the best weapons construction site I know of. There's a link near the bottom to Brother Nolan's Book of Maces. The Barrel Mace plan is excellent for building a lightsaber-type weapon.
Good luck!

It's a FLAIL. hahahaha I didn't even think that you could make those, but apparently I wasn't thinkin very hard. That's pretty cool. Be fun to smack people with it, I'm sure, and I hope you enjoy that.

Yes, flails are pretty neat. You'll get to use it sometime if it ever stops raining, warms up a little, and I get to come over during daylight hours...
