Description *Edited: Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I changed a few things, from the butterfly to the eyes that were too dark for a personification of spring. I also went back to the original coloring I had, which was frendlier and a little rose-tinted. This is the image I finally submitted.
_____________________
I've redone this ([link] ) completely because I want to submit it to a contest and it wasn't nearly large enough, so I repainted it from scratch.

I'm much happier with this than with the original version, but I'd like to make it the best piece it can be, and for that I need feedback on what I can improve. So please, go ahead and tear it apart!

great piccie ^__^

my only observation or little tweak that could be possibly made is that the top half of the head (above eyes) needs to be fractionally extended as her head looks very very slighty out of proportion. I think maybe the dark bit of hair (where the fringe starts) needs to go up a bit and the fringe made longer or something like that..... arrrgh not making sense now

any it's a superb picture and good luck with the contest

I love this, but I actually liked the older version better. The old version was very pretty and light. Sorry

I think the girl needs a little more hair on top? It sort of seems like the head's cut off, but it's actually not. I'm not sure.
But for the hair itself, the overall feel is better than the old one.

But both are really gorgeous. Good work and I hope you win.

To me she looks a lot like a deer, which I like, because deers poray spring and nature well. I think its the dark eyes. I do think that if there was anything that needed to be fix, three are two hairs on her left that look more like twigs then hairs, but other than that its beautiful!

wow! reminds me of those old paintings. since i studied art history. This looks very cool as if she's some beaurocratic rich girl from the 1800s. love the complexion and the eyes.

What's there to tear apart?

My only advanced comment I guess would be, she could be a bit darker in some areas, like around the cheekbones and under the chin cause you have a fairly direct and bright light shining on her. But that's also a stylistic thing too, cause I think your style is more soft than dramatic. So...does that make sense? *sweat*

its gorgeous, but i prefer the original. she looks so much more alive, and like she's questioning something, whereas in this version, she seems to just be blankly staring. it also doesnt really remind me of spring... the way the other one does. dont take this the wrong way, its really good, and you're probably my favourite digital artist, but when i compare them, i do prefer the other one.

I really love how soft her face looks and the softness to her hair. My only real crit is that I think you can probably go darker with the shading in her skin, and more importantly you can include more hues. Because its so peach its slightly flat...

it's well done, but it's too grey for a spring picture.

spring is mostly green and brown with a few bright greens for new grown shoots and buds. maybe put some green in her hair along with those strange twigs (such as buds, maybe), and maybe some more greens in her little wreath. also the butterfly is jarring--maybe because it's a monarch and monarchs are most memorable in autum for their great migrations. also her eyes are very dark, perhaps you were trying to go for innocence? the way they are painted so dark makes me think she's being hounded by something or that she's no longer happy. Blue and green eyes are too cliche so maybe a clear sort of hazel or hazel with a greenish tinge should set it right.

the over all picture reminds me of the ending of summer into fall vs. spring.

very pretty though.

I have to agree with the below comments, it's a beautiful picture, but for a springtime picture, the greenery isn't so...green. XD I love how you did the flowers, perhaps a bit more blue? Spring usually involves a variety of bright and vibrant colors, when you think of spring you sometimes naturally think of fields with beautiful flowers.

As for the sky, April is usually the time for 'Spring Showers', so to me, having those clouds like that is a perfect addition and in my opinion, makes the woman in the picture stand out more. In comparison from the first picture to this one, when I looked at it, I was immediately drawn to her dark eyes in contrast to everything else. The original picture, the lighter eyes and face made her somewhat blend in, whereas in this picture, she stands out but yet does not look any less beautiful. But then again, I like dark eyes...they just...stand out.

Anyway, there's my two cents, a truly beautiful picture!

i like the original spring version, the colors were a lot more spring like. this one does seem really gloomy and grey for a rainy autumn day. i also liked the white hair, blue eyes and shiny lips on the original painting.

This one is great *.*, but the older one reminds me more of spring, as the tones are softer, more "innocent" and the general atmosphere looks more like "spring". This said, spring can be rainy and grey, it just depends on the image of spring you wanna convey

Hrmmm. The only thing that bothers me is the butterfly. We can see the colouration well enough to know that it's a monarch, but the colours are dark and murky, so it looks like a really dirty butterfly. XD I see that you were going for a darker area around there, and if the butterfly was bright, it would draw too much attention down to that corner and away from her face. Might look better if it was closer to the other flowers, and maybe the other way up. He gives that part of the picture kind've a droopy feeling right now.

The old one was a little springier, colour-wise, but this is just gorgeous.

Beautiful. I think the lower eyelid of her right(our left) eye might need more eyelashes. It kinda makes it look like her eyes are looking in different directions. I think the lips and shoulders look fantastic.

Jshei [2005-10-23 17:27:02 +0000 UTC]

I agree, the two twigs do stick out a little weirdly if thats all thats going to be in her hair. Also, it *does* need to be more green. Much more green! That said, I don't think it really needs to be more sunny. Don't forget "april showers bring may flowers" or however that saying goes.
Her shoulder and chest need more definition. Right now I cant really distinguish much in the skin tones.

Okay now that I've criticized I can finish this by saying it look bloody beautiful. There. Great job, you're going to smash the competition in the contest!

it's great as the earlier version, but I think it is more like autumn than spring.. with her gray hair, brown eyes instead of blue and the darker couloured plants, cloudy sky.. it makes me feel as if it was older than spring should be.

wow... *O*
i wub like almost everything about the picture!! one of the best digital realism pics i've ever seennnn *u*
really prettyyyyyy :3
one critique thou, since the title is The Face Of Spring, i think that the bg of the sky should be more bright.. i duno.. cuz the greyness of the clouds seem sorta gloomy n that it might rain any minute... ><"" haha mayb dat's just me, but many add a bit of sunlight, like golden highlights on the clouds and on her hair and face?
and her eyes.. mayb a lighter color? brown/black gives it more of a fall/summer feeling, mayb silvery green/blue? i really like the eye color of ur old version too ^^ but since the hair is darker in this version... brown/black eyes seem to go pretty good x3 since i can't actually see her with diff eye color.. i'm prob wrong about the silvery blue/green thing haha
newayz i really like this picture ^________^ awesome job

This is quite beautiful! Her face is very lovely. Someone below mentioned about the vegetation being brown...if it's spring, I think it should probably lean more toward the greens and yellows perhaps? The butterfly isn't reading quite right...I know it's forced perspective (which I struggle with myself...) but I'm not entirely sure that it's reading as such. I adore her hair! I wish I could get that kind of whispiness in my strokes. Though, the two twigs tha are growing from the hair....are there to be more? Right now, they draw the eye in a little too much, as more of a "wait...what's that? is that supposed to be there?" manner.

Your work never ceases to amaze me. I'm sure it will do very well in the contest.
