Description This is another part of my ongoing project of the decartoonification of AtLA, done from a screenshot from the preview for the season 2 finale, which, being the loyal Zutarian that I am, I found impossible to resist. I call it "trust" because Zuko never lets anybody touch his scar (except for the one time Iroh did, when Zuko was sick, and that was rather incidental to Iroh's attempts to bring down his fever), and he doesn't like to talk about it either ( I think the most he ever talks about it was when he told Song that he got it from a firebender), so to I think that to let Katara touch it, whether to heal it or not, shows a remarkable amount of trust on his part...even if he did loose it as soon as Aang showed up.
.....or, did he....?

This is the best piece of art that tempest-in-blue has yet posted. While viewing "Zutara, Trust", I get the sensation that I am not looking at a drawing, but am, in fact, watching black-and-white television.

The greatest challenge for any artist is not to simply master miscellaneous forms or techniques, or even to preserve an exact replica of a given person or object. Rather, the artist's challenge is to accomplish that which Pygmalion achieved-the ability to capture a feeling, a moment, an aroma that is recognized as familiar. If such an artist draws a picture of my Great Aunt Annie Laura, I will get a similar feeling in the prescence of the drawing that I get in the presence of the actual person.

It is his feat which has been accomplished in "Zutara, Trust". Mind! I do not imply that Zuko and Katara are real people, or that I have actually met them, but I feel that their characters have been captured here.

Zuko's face is a book in which can be read a lifetime of shame and suffering. Rage bubbles within his heart, made all the more potent by the shame and suffering that he carries with him. All the same, he is bringing these horrible feelings under control so that he might accept help from this woman. In this tremendous emotional conflict can be seen the reason for this piece's title.

The dominant emotion apparent in Katara's features is compassion-a sincere desire to help this wounded beast of a man. But behind these features we can still read hints of caution, as could be expected by the facct that these two have not always been peaceful towards each other.

To make a long story short (and I realize it is too late for that), this picture captures a moment in time, along with the characters who live within it. Deep hostility is dying here at the hands of trust.

Finally, this piece passses the test by which I define any art as "good"nce I have viewed it, I feel that my soul is better off.

Ooh! I love it! This picture is so nice.

I found it through having the keyword "Zutara" as one of my slots of the front page.

This is simply fantastic artwork! I really like your sense of style and shading for this piece, as it really works well for the two characters! You really get the impression that these two might care for one another more than they're each letting on! I too, am working on drawing the characters away from their traditional animated looks(though not necessarilly realism). So far I have drawn Zuko(with pony tail), Katara(though slightly older) & a quick rough sketch of Aang, that I ended up coloring digitally. I eventually plan on also drawing Sokka, Avatar Roku, and draw both Zuko & Aang again. I can't wait to see how this season's going to end! Excellent work!
